Steam sale: 50% off Batman Arkham Asylum

For those who have not had the chance to buy this game like me, Steam is offering 50% off till Thursday, bringing the total down to 19.99 from 39.99.

The game got good reviews and from everything i'v read about it, it seems like a good game.

I read some discussion on this elsewhere and came away confused...

Does purchasing this on steam require the use of GFWL (Windows Live) to play the game? If so, does GFWL nearly kill any multiplayer experience the way it seems to have for Street Fighter 4, or is this less of a multiplayer-centric game?

I'm speaking specifically to the horrid matchmaking system and more-frequent-than-not connection errors/drops and lag when playing against console players (no option to turn that off)...

i have the GFWL purchased version from their sale however provided it's like Dirt 2 even a Steam purchase will require use of GFWL however to my knowledge the only known MP in batman is possibly leaderboards?
