Pictured background is supposedly only for 24 hours today. EDIT: They took it down after a blizzard of complaints, it's no longer there.
Logging into a Google account to be able to disable it is not an answer, Google already stores each & every search we ever make on our IP addresses.
This is the answer:
Use Firefox and install this add on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722/
Right click on Google page > NoScript > Forbid google.com
Nuke that crap like that w/o having to log into anything to disable it.

or if you have adblock plus, you can just add a blocking rule for:
http://www.google.com/images/background/*
it won't fix the css, but it will prevent the stupid images from coming up.

You get images? Man mine is nice and white or can click the link at the bottom to remove image.

it looks like google has just added the option to return back to the default as now i just went to their site and it is back to normal with a link to change background image in the bottom left hand corner
deathman20: i never had the option to remove the image. you could change to another image and then get a 'remove image' link, but it would just restore it to one of the defaults.

Did the outrage light up this morning so much that they already pulled the plug on it?
Yeah there was an option in the lower left corner about images but you had to create/log into a Google account to do it.

Did they plan on having this up for a few hours or 24 hours or what.... Did they pull the plug on it because #1 search on Google this morning was how to disable that crap, lol?

Thanks. ↑ Do you think bing will now see that the masses go to Google not just for the searches but because it is simple white w/o pictures...
Maybe bing could consider removing pictures too, if they did, I would consider visiting bing once in a while.

That's funny. It wasn't even up long enough for me to see it before they took it down. I kind of like the idea as long as I can customize it.

I happen to like the pic that doesn't slow down google at all for me...
I mean, i go to Http://google.com/ and then as soon as my eyes see that there's a box, i can type in it (that's instantly btw).
Didn't slow it down a bit for me... made it SEEM slower since the pic took like .3 seconds to fade in, but it was just as fast as always for me...

Umm... no they don't.
I'm preeeeetty sure the masses go to google to find stuff. :p
back when it started, the #1 reason i completely changed to google was because the page was completely void of everything but the search. i've seen several company profiles on google and they always mention how they owe a vast majority of their success to that. I'm really surprised they even tested out that image on the default home page.

It was giving me grief because when I'm connected remotely to a server or computer any images that appear slow down the load times/refresh of the pages. I use google a lot and this caused me several minutes of time in all yesterday.

I get a white background.. Even then I hardly use google.com to begin with. I just have a google searchbar at the top of my firefox browser.
