View Full Version : What CPU do yall recommend?
I am building a computer, i got a sweet K7T266 pro 2 msi motherboard and i got the new G-TI500 gforce 3 video card, and i AM getting a AMD, i wanna know if i should get a 1.7ghz AMD XP or a beautiful 2ghz model. Is the exrta $ worth it or is there not enough of a difference, i went to AMDs site but they always make theres look better so they cannot be trusted. Thanks!!:)

note that the 2000+ isn't actually 2.0ghz. that is a PR rating, to compare it to the performance of the pentium 4 @ 2.0 ghz. the actual clock speed is about 1667mhz if i remember correctly. same goes with the 1700+. it isn't actually 1.7 ghz but something lower with the same performance of a much higher clocked pentium 4. i say if you have the money you might as well go for the 2000+, the extra mhz couldn't hurt, and you have some pretty good braggin rights :)

i would recomend waiting for the throughbred core xp's :) but if u cant wait then get a lower xp or a tbird or duron then when the throughbred comes out just pop it in :) it should be able to oc very high with its die shrink to .13 micron

If you need one now, and have the money, get the 2000+. If you get the right stepping those things overclock to 1.9ghz +++. If not, grab a 1600+ AGOGA stepping, and it'll get 1.8ghz.
If you don't need one now, wait for a throughbred! I'm pretty sure it'll be worth the wait.
I'd wait for the 0.13 TB's too! If you couldn't resist at least wait for a good TB compliant motherboard and stick the 1Gig Tbird in there which overclocks pretty well and you can still use it in the future.

I'm going to wait July-December 2002 for the second generation of the 0.13 Thoroughbred Athlons with Silicon on Insulator technology for greater power saving and lower Watts and heat generation cores or I'll wait for the 32 + 64-bit Clawhammer MP Athlons before I upgrade my fast enuff for now CPUs again!:burn:

xp 1600 is pretty cheap at the moment, that could tide you over till the thoroughbred. besides that with the xp's it seems to me your as likely to hit close to the same speed with the 1600, 1700, or 1800 plus or minus a few mhz.
someone PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong.
but i've heard nothing yet as to wether the socket a mobo's currently out will support the .13 micron chips.
