This is my problem, I hope that I can get some advice on how to set this up. So any and all suggestions would be helpful. Thanks alot.

I use WinXP Pro and have 56k modem that connects to the internet at around 26.4kbs, so anything thats large I need to download at a friends house that has cable. That gets bothersome always going to his house to download things, so my thought is that I could set up a computer that would be at his house all the time so I can logon to and tell it to download anything. He uses AT&T @HOME.
The computer I would have there is a celly 400, 196mbs of RAM, and a 6gb HD so I would be able to run whatever OS I need to.
The way his network is set up is: The cable plugs into his computer in networkcard one and networkcard two is plugged into a switch that distributes the cable to anybody else(this whole setup can be changed if need be). On his computer he is running Winroute Pro in Windows 2000 Pro.
The ideal situation is that my computer is set up at his house out of his way useing only maby 10-20% bandwidth during day hours and useing 100% during night with him having 1st priority.
So how could I use my computer from my house to download things at his house onto the celeron machine?

you just need to bring your computer over jack it into his switch and just set your tcp settings to auto obtain
winroute will easily do this, will auto assign your IP and DNS forwarding. he just needs to increase his address range by 1 under his dhcp scope, unless he already gave extra range
i am sure he knows how to add a new puter using it and his switch

then just get u some PC anywhere, or something like that, and either set up the wake on lan options or just have the systems on and you can remotly admin his and your computers from your home puter with dial in access to the pcanywhere (it works with winroute)

of course you could also unload your system at his house with your dialup, but it would be just as slow

be real aware of security concerns when opening up to remote admin

YOu could also run Linux on it and forward port 23 to it (telnet port) and you could just run ftp or lynx to do all of your downloading. :)

That would be a fairly easy setup to manage, too. Linux pretty much defaults to being able to telnet it and do stuff. The only issue I see is how winroute forward ports.

just have to map that port

How would I go about doing it if I could plug in directly to a router instead of going through winroute?

basically win route just functions as a router(brodcast/nat/port and packet filtering) , so it would be mostly the same, just jack into your router, or the switch or hub conected to the router, configure, set up to optain auto in your tcp on the client , and get you some pcanyware or such

could he also use VNC to take control of his computer at his buddies house?

he could use VNC but I've found that VNC carries alot high overhead than PC anywhere. Pc Anywhere just responds faster. I've used it to admin most of the systems I have built after I tried it as an alternitive to VNC. But then again VNC is free...
