Hey all. I am currently using the SVC Golden Gate(orig.) with a delta 38cfm, it is as loud as a blowdryer and only keeps my 1.2/266 T-Bird at 45-50c.

My problem is that I am now in a dorm room and would like to beable to run my system without driving myself and my roommate mad, I mean I cant run it in the morning without feeling like a jerk because it is so loud.

Problem #2 is that it dose not sufficenly cool my CPU. One of the main resons is that I have not ducted straight out from the HSF to the case side because I have not found a way to cheeply cut a hole without mangeling up my nice case.

I have heard that the Glaciator 2 is much quieter than many other HSFs, and I really like the review of the Cool Master HHC-001. So I am turning to you guys for advice, main concern is the noise... but I need to beable to run my comp at full load without it shooting up to 53c like it currently does. I am not going to overclock untill I get my act togeather and set up a water rig, which may be sometime form now.

So thank you in advance, lay it on me.

Peace

I have an HHC-001 sitting here and it's every bit as loud as the CBK-38 next to it, with the Delta 38cfm screamer. the Golder Gate is a good cooler. I'm a little surprised at your CPU temps using it. Have you done the case ventilation test? Y'know, take the side cover off and see if the CPU temp goes down. You might be able to use a quieter fan like the YS-Tech 27cfm if you can keep the temperature inside of the case down. Otherwise, the Glaciator 2 is substantially more quiet than any HSF using the Delta 38. Otherwise, consider an HSF based upon the 80mm footprint as opposed to the 60mm.

I've been using the volcano 7 which is an 80mm heatsink. It's good if you have a case fan ducted to it and remove its thermistor so the fan runs at full speed. I'm looking into the volcano 7+, but haven't seen any reviews yet (full copper instead of cu/al). I bet its 80mm too. But with these large HSF's, you need a fast fan, or outside air to get good performance. And either of those will generally cause more noise...

I just ordered a glaciator 2 and a couple of fans- YS Tech 60mm and 92mm, along with some Arctic Silver 3! That's 40cfm and 66cfm respectively. I'd like to use the 92mm ducted to the hsf, and replace the glac's stock fan with the 60mm YS Tech. I have a 2 blowholes in my case side panel, one blowing right on the cpu. I'm using a chopped-up plastic funnel for my duct.

If you have access to a drill, you could punch a whole lot of holes in your side panel and mount a large fan blowing onto your HSF. The big ones are usually pretty quiet. If you have an exhaust fan in the back, you could flip it to blow air in and make a duct to your HSF. But you're gonna want to keep your total case airflow near balanced... same intake cfm and exhaust cfm, or maybe slightly higher intake than exhaust. To get a quieter fan on your heatsink, buy or make an adapter and use a larger fan. This way you can get the same amount of airflow but at lower fan rpms and noise.

I just got an Alpha 8045 from Newegg. It uses an 80mm fan, I got the 46.1cfm Delta. It cools very, very good and isn't anywhere near as noisy as those Delta 38's. I highly recomend it!

If you need a cheap way to make a nice hole in your case pick up a $10 nibbeling tool from the "Shack"

I love the Alpha pal8045 that I have, Right now I have a tiny little fan on it... And it keeps my temps to around 45 at full load. Here's a link to buy one:
Newegg.com Alpha pal8045 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=62&manufactory=1463&DEPA=1)
I'd recomend getting it w/o a fan, then find a fan that best fits your needs.

Ever thought of using variable fan speeds? I'm getting a Rheostat for my Delta 80 CFM Screamer, It's gonna be nice having the extra cooling when you need it. If your interested, Talk to Hoot, he's got a Rheostat surpluss at the moment, and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to sell one(or two... or umm... maybe even four[hehe what a hoot]) to yah.

Well thanks for all the recomendations. I guess I am most concerned about limiting the noise. And yes, my temps are high because I have poor case ventalation and I think I am going to fix that by drilling holes in the side of my case with like a 1/4" bit and making a 80mm fanguard out of the side of my case and puting an 80mm fan that ducts to blow air on my HSF, good idea? or should I just duct straight to the hole without the 2nd fan.

Oh and if anyone has any more recomendations for HSFs that produce less noise or of any other noise reducing mesures please let me know. Thanks
