They've done this the last 2 years over Christmas time, I think it was so successful they are wanting to do it twice a year so since it is almost exactly 6 months after Christmas, we get the summer sale!

Witcher Enhanced Directors Cut , 6$

That's by far the best sale item I saw looking through them. Older game at this point but a perfect blend of RPG, non-kiddie gray area choices (and non-kiddie themes too), and action-RPG. I just don't game enough (or really, at all) to buy some games that may just be a shot in the dark or worth a few hour's play at most.

A few that did catch my eye were the AI War games. Anyone played those?

Pandam00nium
06-25-10, 01:42 AM
There are a few games I want, but I'll probably have to pass. Already spent some money I shouldn't have today on other things. D:

Trine for $4 is really tempting. Beat hazzard has a great concept, but I didn't like the controls much when I played the demo. It's similar to audiosurf, but a rhythm... space shooter..?

Edit - Fixed a damn punctuation error. Happy? :P

It's not that bad, took me about 15 minutes to scan the titles but I only looked at details for a few. Not too many big name standouts but it's worth looking through if you're looking for some games.

Alright - The Witcher was something I was NOT able to enjoy/finish for a number of reasons, but it appears the "enhanced version/director's cut" on sale now ($6.79) addresses all the major things I remember disliking - bad translation / missing dialogue / clunky inventory...

I'm going to give it another try - I recall this being a title I WANTED to enjoy, but couldn't immerse myself and get "in the flow."

Trine has me intrigued - based on the screenshots, is it kinda like lego starwars on the consoles?

I received GRID as a free game for some hardware purchase in the past - personally wouldn't call this worth the CD it may have been printed on, but that's my tastes... I've never played a racing game on PC that really drew me in.

I ended up with Ghostbusters and RE5 today. Infact I almost snagged Ghostbusters last night but figured I should wait out the 10 days of deals first.

Anyways I do very much agree with justifying it. Imho the end of next month would be the best time to catch me with the extra pay week and all.

On another note it seems that the servers are taking a real beatdown over this sale. Trouble with connections for game downloads and sometimes searching by price would give me no games found issues.

It's a conspiracy, the gaming industries newest anti-piracy countermeasure. They let you buy the game but don't let you get a copy, so even if you crack the DRM you can't upload the data.

But have you tried accessing the store through a web browser or just try steam? Seems odd that you can't even access that, the download servers I can understand going down during large sales, but the store itself, seems like that's what they'd want to allocate the most resources towards.

I agree, however I am contemplating on Kane and Lynch along with EVE. I could use some mmo action and 2$ is a pretty cheap buy in for a month. The only thing that makes me think twice about EVE is jumping into MMO's late in the games life sometimes provides a very rough experience.

Gothic is an extremely solid experience if you haven't already tried it. I'm a bit dissappointed they didn't decide to include the first installment in this bundle - it was great too, but definitely relatively dated and clunky... The control scheme for combat is *different* and takes some getting used to (you'll probably die a few times figuring it out), and it was developed first and foremost for a German audience so expect a few "lost in translation" moments. You'd find this series extremely refreshing if you like fantasy action-RPG's, but are tired of the typical copy-paste Lord of the Rings style lore. If you're one to value story over graphics, I'd reccommend also trying out the first installment first, if only to get a feel for the background of the Gothic world (and be treated to an awesome story). I'd argue Gothic was one of the first PC titles to ever get a 3rd-person action-RPG to "work" in terms of playability and depth of the system - Zelda64 beat Gothic to the punch, but then that was in the world of consoles =).

As a caution, all of the Gothic games have a trait (which I like) that may frustrate others - the environment is UNFORGIVING! I personally had a lot of laughs and tense, futile attempts to not die upon testing various fauna in the Gothic worlds - it was a blast learning what you can and can't do until you're at a higher level, and helped pull me into the world/story that much more.

Max Payne is also dated in controls/graphics (for its time it was stellar), but it set a standard for overlayed narrative/storytelling that I compare modern titles against. The game plays out something like an animated/voiced graphic novel in-between 3rd-person shootemup romps. The game is surprisingly challenging if you want to see it through - you'll be punished in time for lulling into "casual" playing after the game eases you into the first areas.

All of Civ4 for $10 is not the best deal Steam has ever done (I seem to recall it dipped a *bit* lower), but that's quibbling over crumbs. Civ4+Warlords is a phenomenal game at any price, and if this is not already in your library it belongs there if you have any capacity to enjoy strategy games =).

I don't put much stock in metacritic. "Professional" reviewers don't know anything more than the rest of us. Look at The Last Remnant, http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/lastremnant shows it at "only" 66/100, but it's easily a 95 in my book. 8.7/10 user rating. Jericho shows 63/100 "professional" but 7.2/10 for user ratings.

I thought it was a good deal at $10, for under two bucks, it's a sure thing

It has more to do with that they are usually better at approaching the game in a more critical manner then just lambasting their opinion of this or that. Many times, they are able to review a game for what it is, instead of what it isn't. (Not always though, mind you.) Obviously, every reviewer is unique so you need to find your own group of persons to rely on. Either way, for the most part professional reviewers are much more capable and qualified to make their reviews then the average person, or even heavy gamers. Being critical is key, and the internet sorely lacks in that department.

Red Faction Guerrilla worth the $5?

Well, it gets fairly repetitive (>90% of the time you're just running around blowing stuff up to unlock the next mission or collecting salvage to get upgrades).

Kind of disappointed in it since in the first one, which was the reason I bought RF:G, the geomod tech was kind of built around the game, you could use it for a tactile advantage or you could just play it as a normal FPS game. RF:G is the opposite, it just comes off as a giant tech demo, the entire game seems to be based on blowing up buildings.

That being said, yes, I think it's worth $5, but not much more. I managed to play through the entire game and was entertained, but after that I never played it again.

Edit: heh, then again I seem to be the minority. Metascore of 82 and user score of 8.1.

*snip*

Might actually get a copy of Torchlight. Heard good things about it. Still have just over 6 1/2 hours to decide on The Void.

Torchlight is conceptually:
1. Diablo 1 (1 town, 1 deeeeep dungeon with changing environments, linear story on the short side) with
2. Diablo 2's gameplay enhancements (skill trees, set items, gambling, sockets)
3. A "steampunk fantasy" artistic style/direction distinctly different from Diablo I/II - comparable to Blizzard's warcraft/WoW series but with more blood.
4. A few extra gameplay additions like fishing for random items and a pet to hold/sell your stuff while you push forward
5. Moddability - quite a lot of material out there too, including some toptal overhaul projects underway - haven't checked to see whether any have been completed.

If you were ever a Diablo I/II nut, you will probably enjoy Torchlight at $5.

There's a demo IIRC.

Is anyone else having problems with the ported games like RE5 and the older DOS games crashing all the time?

No technical problems here - strongly recommend using a gamepad though (I played it through with my PS1 pad + USB adapter). Don't forget there's texture enhancements mods out there to improve the UI and game visuals! I'd suggest uninstalling and re-downloading... maybe hiccup happened along the way?

Mass Effect 2 for $24.. Hmmmmmmm

I've looked hard at that but I'm going to pass this one for a few reasons:

1. I never finished ME1, I take it that's a bad prospect for finishing/enjoying ME2... got lost exploring endless indentical-looking planets for pointless artifacts or something... totally lost how to proceed with the main story and found I'd leveled to an overpowered state =/... First part of the game felt golden to me though - except for the elevators - oh, god, the elevators XD

2. Steam sales like this have ruined me :p in a sense! Someday I may run out of games to play through again (I've got SUCH a backlog of "to play" and "to play again" items now), and that someday I might find ME2 on sale for $5 or $10 because the sequel ME3 is due to come out =).

...When/If-ever I do get around to it though, I understand ME2 is supposed to have fixed a number of ME1 issues - including the "un-romancibility" of my favorite NPC - Tali =). If ME2 is anything like the first parts of ME1, I'll surely enjoy it!

I played it a bit on console and found it to just feel like playing WoW except I had to pause and choose what other characters do in order to make it. Or setup some lengthy thing to make them play in a way that didnt mimic a terrible WoW player.

It lasted me a whole 30min before I decided i was done. Of course I could have had that feeling because it was the first RPG I was going to try after quitting WoW.

Sounds like you had a 'prepatch,' I can't remember the version number, modded item where the bonuses and chance to fail were much lower than intended. It really made for some stupidly overpowered items. There are mods however to change things back to that way ;) I can tell you I was pissed the first time I had a half-decent item become unmodded...a pretty kickass gun on my ranger chick character that did like 900+DPS, it was with the corrected mod system but even then it felt somewhat overpowered at times at least I planned ahead and had a comparable backup. I lost some very nice boots on first mod though, that hurt :-/

I did what I do with most games with Torchlight: played the snot out of it for a short while, stopped one day, and never restarted. I didn't even finish the main quest haha. I will pick it up some day I'm sure but the game mods that were available even 6-8 months ago were fun, I can only imagine what's out there now.

Yeah I played torchlight for like 12 hours straight one day and never picked it up, I got to the point where I spammed a some fire arrow and that is all I really did, got real bored. I hope D3 has more depth than this. The problem with D2 ( comparing to games now ) is that basically you invest in to a single skill and use that for the entire game, gets real boring, like a hammerdin.

Meh, so far seeing a bunch of stuff either I don't want or already have, which is a plus at this point. Tropico 3 is the only decent looking thing since I liked the first one, but $7.50 is a bit much for a game I'll play once then forget about.

I didn't see anywhere it explicitly stated any guarantee as to how long the sale would last, and maybe they just ran out of copies and removed the listing. Anyway, doesn't matter:

G. Pricing and Payment for Merchandise.

In addition to the above, the following terms apply to pricing of and payment for Merchandise. The prices for Merchandise displayed on Steam are subject to change at any time without notice. Charges for shipping, handling and tax may not be included in displayed prices for Merchandise but will be displayed during the purchase process, although such displayed prices may not include all taxes, duties, and other fees that you may be obligated to pay to applicable government authorities.

07-02-10, 09:02 AM
there is a giant timer at the top of the list of daily sales that says how long they are going to last.

they didn't run out of copies cause they were still selling the game after they took it off sale.

does it matter what there pricing policy says if its against the law? what if their pricing policy said we will say we are charging you one thing but will charge your credit card whatever we please. that doesn't make it legal or right.

jediman
07-02-10, 09:07 AM
they are subject to change without notice but as far as i'm aware (ianal) they can't advertise that the price is not going to change and then change the price.

jediman
07-02-10, 09:19 AM
plus to argue that they ran out of stock they need to clearly advertise that stock is limited (especially in a digital distribution model where stock is never limited) but it doesn't matter cause they were still selling the game so they still had stock.

ratbuddy
07-02-10, 09:20 AM

Read it again, all they say is "Today only! It's time to save! Hurry before time runs out!" which promises nothing. You're acting like they said "These games will all be on sale at these prices for the next 24 hours!"

Just sit back and enjoy the sale, it's more fun without nitpicking

edit: Uhm, whoa, nice triple post, didn't see part 3 till this was up. Steam can indeed run out of stock. The publisher gives them a certain number of license keys for some games and if they run out, they need to get fresh stock before they can sell any more. I've seen it happen a few times.

? today only means that it is on sale today . . . not that it is on sale today unless we don't feel like it anymore. the latter scenario is bait and switch. I see a daily advertisement. I go to a place where i can buy advertised item. They say hey that's 4 times the price but look at all this other great stuff you can have on sale you should be happy still. that's fraud. So yes an advertisement of an item in a daily sale for a sale price is a promise. If BB posted in the papers core i7 980x's for $50! in this weekends circulars and you got there and they were $1000 instead, how is that any different?

Dude.. Give it up, the game simply isn't on sale any more. Bait and switch doesn't apply here. If they were STILL advertising it at $10 and clicking 'buy now' resulted in a price of $30, fine, that's bait and switch (or a pricing display error). Done with this little sidetrack, feel free to sue Steam if you can find a lawyer who won't laugh you out of their office.

jediman
07-02-10, 10:18 AM
obviously I'm not going to hire a lawyer over a 30 dollar game . . . but that doesn't mean people should ignore illegal business practices. BBB and state attorney general inform ftw.

bait and switch doesn't have anything to do with whether they are still advertising it. it's whether I (or other consumers) see it when it is being advertised.

But that's just it. I can't find anywhere in the steam store that says all displayed games will remain at that price for the full 24 hours, just the main title which, IMHO, implies it could be UP TO 24 hours, just not more.

Not only that, when they stopped selling it for $10, they stopped advertising it for $10, you're making it sound like they changed it back to it's original price but left it's sale price on the main page.

If you are going to blame somebody, blame the publisher, they claim it was "accidentally" put on sale. The publisher has the final say on all pricing and availability issues on Steam for third party games.

The event is many days of 1 day sales it was advertised to me on sale and when i went to buy it ,it was not there which is bait and switch. I blame both steam and the publisher. It wasn't put on sale on accident steam has had 10 items on sale every day on the one day sale section and that day it was 9. One of the two (most likely the publisher) is being a jerk and causing steam to break the law. If steam really was the one who got owned due to some contract they have with the publishers (they didn't really because a contract can't force you to break the law), then i hope at least they have some means of punishing egosoft for monkeying with their operation.

Well, go and file your complaint. These things happen all the time, someone enters a number wrong or checks a box they weren't supposed to and the price of something drops drastically. They end up choosing not to honor the advertised price and nothing happens. Why? Because stuff happens, and the BBB and whoever else manages these things know this.

I think that's one of the most overrated games to come along in the past several years. Picture Baldur's Gate 2 with less gameplay depth and a heck of a lot more talking.

Worth it at $10 maybe, but not $24, and hella not worth the $50 I got suckered in for.
Ratbuddy is it really that bad?

Dragon Age is not bad, but is was definitely over-hyped from all fronts (developers on down the chain) as "the spiritual successor to Bauldur's Gate." It's a great game in and of itself, and I think I and many others might have enjoyed it much more for what it is if it weren't touted to be the next bar-setter for the RPG genre. I'd take any bitter feelings from hardcore gamers to be just disappointment - it's a fine (and lengthy!) game if you weren't too caught up in the hype.

Pricing for any PC game these days is more fiercely tied more to how long it's been out and the developers than quality/quantity of enjoyment. $24 is a very decent price for a good (if not legendary) quality game that's still fairly new.

[EDIT]: Jediman, you're coming off as a little bit angry with the world, but I'm perceiving you might be genuinely curious to learn a bit about to what extent "bait and switch" is legal in the USA.

"Bait and switch" describes a series of behaviors - most of them are not illegal actions, but can be when such tactics are done with direct intent to deceive. That underlined word is why we have lawyers, and why certain industries are able to use bait and switch tactics regularly without repercussions (airlines, car dealerships, etc...), as it's pretty difficult to prove. Some specific acts with intent, like jacking up prices for limited stock on a black friday, are in fact legal with the appropriate fine print.

In any case, it's not clear, but if you feel deceived based on a recent Steam sale purchase, you will get a lot less remediation through BBB or a lawyer than if you just explained the situation to a Steam representative in a civilized manner (ranting here is guaranteed to get you nowhere)! If you simply missed a sale however, expect anyone to simply laugh at your furious indignation =).

I'd say it's worth it at $10. However I found it to be very repetitive. I stopped playing after the third zone because I found the AI to suck. Seems like all they did to make it harder was just increase the enemy's HP tenfold.

I never got to play it with many people. I would think that's where most of the fun is.

King's Bounty: The Legend, Puzzle Kingdoms, Borderlands DLC: Mad Moxxi, Borderlands DLC: The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, Borderlands DLC: Dr. Ned, Space Trader, DarkStar One, Ghostbusters: The Videogame

Total was about $24. Not bad, but I feel like a doofus anyway. I just started playing through Baten Kaitos again, and expect it to last a good two weeks before I look at any other games

I picked up Cryostasis, Jericho, The Void, and Thief : Deadly Shadows.

Not bad for like $15 :p
