can u get ur hands on a new socket a to test the rest of the components?
i dont think a little AS2 would fry the chip, but if the l2's control voltage, maybe

i think it was the voltage control.........anyways should i buy another XP1600 or an 1800? i have $200 FLAT and im going to comp show this weekend......so much for the videocard :-(

if u get a good stepping like the one in my sig, the 1600 wil go to somewhere around 1.7 on air and an 1800 will go to like 1.8 on air.the AG GA Y's are very good o/c ers, with the blank being any letter. and the Y is the most important, the Y's seem to oc great.
did u have another chip on the mobo that fried your CPU before that one? im still kinda doubtful that a little AS2 would fry the chip. it could SHORT it, but it wouldn't smell burnt(probably). Do u have alot of experience mounting HSF's? not saying u dont, but u might have mounted her wrong too. even a TINY BIT uneven will fry the chip. i would test that board with a friends duron or the likes, wouldn't want to fry another XP!
if u already know all of this, then nevermind, im not tryin to say u dont know what ur doin or nothin:D

hmmm thats odd..... dont they say on asII's site that its non conductive?? i thought i seen it somewhere on there but i could be wrong... but still it would seem like u have a dead xp for some reason... when u took the hsf off did u look at the asII on the hs to see if it made full contact?? i'v heard of xp's bending and not making contact like they should...
Arctic Silver is non-conductive although its capcitive. So if you were putting on ramsinks and you were happen to put some in the leads on the side of the ram then it would most likely link them and damage!

also the chip would fry right away if the heatsink did not make contact?whys that

because the chip would heat up too much and fry

that fast? i turned on my computer and the CPU burned out in like 3 seconds...i don't think it gets hot that fast....does it?

yea, AMD says on their website that u get like a 10 second window. alot of times people turn it on and it doesn't even finish the post.

will underclocking the thunderbird by setting the jumpers to the lowest fsb, multiplier before installing the cpu protect it in case you dont do heatsink properly? also when will amd use thermal protection like intel does? I may not buy another cpu till amd gets thermal protection. I can live with my celeron(s) a few more years

No, underclocking will not keep the chip from reaching a terminal temp quickly. Just make sure your heat sink will seat properly on the chip. Put some white termal paste on the chip and set the heatsink on there. Take it off and look at the bottome of the heat sink. you should see a nice imprint of the WHOLE cpu on the bottom of the heat sink in the paste.
good luck next time and sorry for the fried chip. thats a bummer.
I would go with the xp 1800 if you have the money. The difference between the 1600 and 1800 is significant.

If the fan dies, will the cpu fry? are athlons fire hazards if they overheat?
Malakai

yes, if the fan goes out, it can fry. u got an ok chance of it shutting down or crashing 1st. some motherboards automatically shut down if the fan dies.

when will amd ever use thermal protection? intel has it since the pentium!
