Since this will be my first use of a P4 northwood I want to make sure I am correct in assuming that it is best to remove the thermal pad and use thermal paste (as2) with these cpu's?

it's always best to do that, with ANY chip you use, not just the Northy's...

I wish that I had not used the thermal pad as now removing the heatsink its gonna be tricky. It has bonded to the NW nicely:(

However as I have a similar system would you tell me what temp your CPU is running at? mine idles at 43 C and under heavy load it rises to 53 C ish.

I have a NW 2.2 ,ABIT TH7II, standard cooler . If I am running hot then I will remove the pad and try some Artic Silver , what do you think?

I am just scouting information, my cpu won't be here until friday if you are talking to me.

Read some more threads and guys running P4 1.7 are at 23 C ish so I think the cooler will be coming off and I'll try the AS, if it doesn't improve I'll buy the new Heatsink.(Zalman Flower Pentium IV CNPS6500-alcu 'silent' CPU Cooler (HS-002-ZA)

Thanks all

PS Placid if you use the ABIT board which is great get the BIOS downloaded now it will need upgrading, and don't forget to load the 850 intel drivers like I did cos it will crash alot otherwise :)

i wouldn't expect to run 23c ish with just applying AS

i don't want to get your hopes up

i run my P4 1.7 about that temp idle or booting but i have my system watercooled
