View Full Version : W2K Pro - Can't DEFRAG?
I figured it was time to DEFRAG my HDD [which I have never done on W2K Pro], and when I try I get this error...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*16 bit Windows Subsytem*
An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly. Choose "Close" to terminate the application.
/Close/ /ignore/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After I hit ignore I get....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*error Defragmenting Drive C*
Windows cannot defragment this drive now because it has been locked by a disk utility. Quit any utilities that may have locked this drive, and try defragmenting the drive again.
ID No. DEFRAG00105 /OK/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not tried to lock anything, so I really don't know what's going down??? Thanks in advance.

My best guess would be that the boot sector of the hard disk is infected with a virus:(...hopefully this isn't the case.
virus...really? How can I check?

I just thought of something else that would cause this error, and that is...if the file allocation table (FAT) table is damaged. The first thing you might want to try is...run "chkdsk /r /f" (without the quotes) from a command prompt (DOS window within W2K). Schedule "chkdsk" to run on the next boot, reboot, and hopefully it will have found repairable errors on the drive. Using the /f switch will force "chkdsk" to run a surface scan of the drive, in addition to repairing any problems it finds (using the /r switch)...so it may take awhile to complete, depending on the size of the boot partition.

I did that "Chkdsk/r/f", I don't think any errors were found. I tried to defrag, and I'm getting the same results. I'm a bit worried now??? :eh?:

Have you tried scanning your drive for a virus?
where are you running the defrag command? from a DOS window? Are you running the Windows2000 defrag utility, or a 3rd party util?
yes dont run defrag from your cmd line
just right click on the drive you want to defrag
then properties
then tools\defrag
same with checking your disk
You also might want to try it in safe mode.
I'm running the Win2k Defrag, I tried the right click/C: Drive and it worked. I'm just a bit shady on the fact that it wouldn't run off of the defrag icon/shortcut? I'm gonna reformat soon, thanks for the info.
could just be bad link/path issue
check your shortcut properties should say:
%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc for target
and
C:\WINNT\System32 for start in
also could have wrong security give it allow all
and under general for opens with : microsoft management consol

where can I adjust this?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools
then right click on the shortcut for Disk Defragmenter
click properties
and check each tab and see what shows
Yeah Turd, I clicked on the shortcut properties, and they are right. What's with that "security" MS management Console? Thanks for the help bud!

I did a virus scan, and nothing turned up. I used a firewall/virus scan I read about in the new issue of PC Magazine, it's called "eSafe Desktop", and can be downloaded for FREE... www.ealaddin.com
VIRUS SCAN = NEGATIVE!
make yourself a new shortcut to your defrag, put it on your desktop, click on it, if it works
take it and overwrite your system tools one
and you should be fine, i would suspect that the existing nonworking shortcut is corupt for some reason

Don't Windows 2K and XP mount the drives on your comp so only Windows itself can use them? I noticed that in XP I can't do a scandisk with Norton Utilities 2002. I have to set it to scandisk after reboot.
