Hi,
I am having a problem with Win2000 booting up on my laptop, it is fully compliant to win2000. The computer boots up to the normal windows screen with the menu bar and start button at the button at the bottom and then hangs for about 3 mins and shows no icons. After this there are no problems but it is anoying to wait about 4 mins to boot up. I have all the latest updates, service packs and drivers. Does Win2000 create a bootlog like all other MS Operatine systems and if so is there a bootlog analyser program I can use to analyse it to see what program is causing the problem. I only have a few programs run at start up and I have also removed these and it doesn'y solve the problem.

I have also had this problem with my pc B4 I installed XP so I don't think it is the laptop just a bug with 2000.

Any ideas or help please.

Start the system normally. As soon as you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, hit F8. Then choose Enable Boot Logging. Or, in the boot.ini file, after "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fast detect add a space, and the switch /BOOTLOG. After you boot, look for the file ntbtlog.txt. This will tell you what drivers and/or services where loaded and might give you a clue to what is hanging you up.

Sounds like a driver issue to me. I'm sure it'll turn up in the log, however.

does it boot right up with the mouse attached?

I have run the bootlog but it doesn't mension any times but there are about 10 drivers that couldn't load. I think I will run a repair win2000 this weakend unless anyone can suggest a way around this.

I have a MS mouse attached to the PS2 port

ok if you want to see where it actually starts to hang try this: modify your boot. ini so after fastdetect it looks like this:
/fastdetect /SOS
then reboot, instead of the blue bar indication you will get get to see what is going on during startup
hope it helps, i too suspect a hardware detection/driver issue, but ,
you can right click on my computer
click on manage\event viewer
then check your application and system error logs
see what is up there as well
