View Full Version : What is the best way to reduce noise?

At the moment I only have 2 fans in my case, one on the heatsink and one in the back sucking air out. The one on the heatsink is a Delta 60mm 50 cfm fan (in other words, it is LOUD!:D ) I'm just wondering, what is the best kind of material I can put on the walls of my case to reduce the noise it makes? If any place has such a material, could someone please post a link? Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Hi The_Ryz_Factor,
There are different way to reduce the noise of Delta's, you can go with the 7v mod, or use the Dynamat panels used for High-End car audio systems, but both are the best ;)

No modding for me thank you! :D

Where can I find such Dynamat panels?? That's the kind of thing I definitely want.

Well, the 7v mod is really easy, fast & safe,
for Dynamat panels take a look here (http://www.dynamat.com/) where you can found resellers near you too ;)

How will the 5V drop reduce the cooling performance?

I suppose the mod is done by replacing the ground (black) of the +12V (yellow) by the +5V (red)?

Please advise, thanks. 'cause I just got a Delta 80mm which is damned cool but damned annoying...

Yes you are right, but this is for the 7v mod, and generally your Cpu temp will rise of 3-4 degree C, but more depends by the Case airflow ;)

P.S. Probably is stupid, but obviously is better if you take the +12 & +5 line from the PS, and not from the Mobo, and note, you'll loose the Rpm signal with this mod!

oh, yes, I have been talking about the 4 wires (red, yellow, blackx2) from the PSU:D

Now do I really need those "Dynarollers" or is that just some crap they're trying to sell me when I can probably find something similar around the house?

Well, Dynamat & Noise Killer are leaders in CarAudio, but for sure there are a lot of other company that manufacture this kind of isolating panels, and you can consider the cork panels too ;)

No no no I think I may just use this stuff... I was just talking about the roller things they have on their site that are supposed to be used for installation of this stuff. Probably to get it the flattest it can be on the panel of my case.

Sorry, my mistake,
well I suppose that you can found locally something similar or better use a small glass bottle ;) but I haven't experience about, onestly I've used the cheaper tarred panels for automotive use into my case, works a little but I'm not using that kind of Delta monster, is in my Dad's Pc :D

Dynamat is good, but is really better suited for reducing lower frequency vibrations in large panels - like what is found in automobiles. It works in computer cases, but it does not seem to cut much of the high frequency vibrations associated with high RPM fans like you delta

Best results in cutting noise down has been with acoustic foam panels backed with 3 mm neoprene.

One big way to cut down on fan and HD noise is to mount them using either silicone or rubber spacers. This reduces vibrational noise transmitted to the case and can make a huge difference in noise.

Cutting fans to 7V is a great idea, but I would recommend using a rheostat over the 12V/5V wire trick.

You can pick up the acoustic foam at many gituar stores, raw neoprene from foamorder.com (http://www.foamorder.com) and have a look at 7volts.com (http://www.7volts.com) for all kinds of voltage mods and ways to cut noise.

sonny where can I find perforated foam like that? and another question, would I be able to find the same kind of foam at foamorder.com at like a hardware store?

hEY GUYS I SAW UR cONVERSATION. i USED THE dYNO MAT IN MY ANTEC SOHOfILe sERVEr CASE AND IT ONLY LOWERED MY TEMPS BY A DEGREE OR TOO, MAKING IT HAVE MORE PRESSURE IN THE CASE. iTS NOT WORTH IT. pLUS THE sMELL IS REALLY BAD FOR LIKE A WEEK OR TOO

You can find acoustic dampening foam like this;http://www.partsexpress.com/images/260-318m.jpg
atParts Express (http://www.partsexpress.com/index.cfm) . Do a search for part#260-318. You will also find links to other acoustic products from that page.

The biggest problems I have found with Dynamat are the additional weight it adds to your case, and the heavy cost. Just something to consider.
