It recently hit my fancy to actually check and see what the running temperature of my system is, after having wandered around o/c.com and this forum.

As it turns out, it runs at an ambient temp of 18-20 C and the cpu is at 47 C(idle) and 52 C(working). Now the apparent concenus is that 45 is most peoples limit and 40 or lower would be better.

My question is, being new to the whole HSF scene, is what the best cooler for my cpu would be. Noise is not factor.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Heatsink performance test (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/)

Swiftech has the best performing hsf right now nut they are a liitle spendy.

Last I checked SVC has the Alpha Pal 8045 w.o fan for 29.98 ~36.00 with a ys 48cfm fan there is a link in the cyber deal forum if your interested. Make sure it will fit your mobo before you buy...

The Swiftech MC462a is what I have on my 1.4 Tbird system, and I love it. Yes it does cost loads more for a few more c, but if you are serious about air cooling then every c counts ;)
Ofcourse that's just my opinion. You will find HSF that cool well for less, alot less ;)
BTW welcome to the forums!
Checkout our Seti team if ya get time, click the link in my sig ;)

I personally like the Glaciator II or the Heatpipe Series of Coolermaster.

Their cheap and very efficent.

A Golden Orb is your best bet!

OK I am just kidding. I like my Alpha pal6035. It has a copper pad and aluminum fins/spikes. It should be reasonably priced. and motherboard fitment shouldnt be a problem.... but Alpha's clips can be a pain so take your time.

Same here. although I have a glaciator and not a glac II. Very heavy, but cooling is effective(not the absolute best but good) and I can still hear the phone ring.
The original copper glaciator has come down in price since I purchased mine. It's easy to install but is very, very heavy. Glaciator II is a bit lighter. Have you checked the heatsink reviews on the front page to see what they have to say? http://www.overclockers.com/topiclist/index15.asp#HEATSINK REVIEWS AND TIPS

Glacitor first one is cheap now about 14 dollars. Although it was 100% copper and you can use it as dumbells... :D

heh. thanks for all the advice. gives me some good things to check out. as for the seti, i would love to continue to run it (currently have 750+ packets completed), but for some reason, it keeps freezing my system. have tried it under 98se and ME and XP...well. xp ran it fine i think, but i had other issues with that.

well. thanks again for the fast response

dude, instead of join SETI, why not consider folding@home? i mean, finding an alien is fun, but helping people to find a cure for their illness is more important;) or better yet, join both.

The "Best" aircooling you can get right now is the Swiftech MCX462 with a Delta 80cfm fan. This setup is loud, but you should not see 40C Ever with ambiend at 18-20C. On my XP with this fan and sink the highest I see is 36C under load. when it is 17-21 ambient I idle at 27-29!

I have several Epox 8K7A boards running with the tbird 1.4 and the Swiftech gave me the best temps, but was quite expensive. The next best was a tie between the Global Win CAK38 and the ThermalRight SK-6. Glaciator II was a very close 3rd.

I'm using the Sanyo Denki fan on my swiftech, it's very suprising how much more quiet it is than the delta, and it really stays within 2 c

I love my Glaciator. It's quiet, and a great performer. :)

ok guys the thread reads [u]best hsf for 1.4tb? The "Best" aircooling you can get right now is the Swiftech MCX462 with a Delta 80cfm fan. If you what to use socket tabs I would get the swiftech MCXC370 http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=35-108-008-01.JPG/35-108-008-02.JPG/35-108-008-03.JPG/35-108-008-04.JPG

Those hsf that use the 4 mounting holes are a real pain if you have to remove it often

hmm. how odd. it would appear that my motehrboard doesn't have those holes in it for mounting heatsinks like the mcx462. allwell. the 370 seems as if it should perform nearly as well. with any luck, the new mobo that i'll get when the thoroughbreds come out will have em. :)

my alpha pal 8045 with the 47 cfm delta works, great, as you can see below, and for all you non believers, im using the motherboard monitoring system, but i checked it one day, with a temp doctor or whatever they are called. and they are .1 C difference......so id say it works well, and at 1.53 ghz, temps go up to 35 load....still...quite good

i have a 45 cfm fan on my alpha and its oced to 1.333 from 1.13 (not bad i guess i would go higher but would need a higher vcore which i cant get without moding my mobo) i get about 38 idle with 23 case temp and 42 under load.. if u dont need to take off ur heatsink this is a great HS.. and u can move ur PC around without worring if the HEATSINK is to heavy or if it might fall off or whatever. also if u install it right there is a EXTREMELY small chance of cracking ur core after its on and thats a really small chance..
