Nice price. Only bad thing about TD is they don't properly pacakage the hard drives. They put it in some dinky plastic case and then put it in an oversized box and put some packing paper in the box but it's not even enough paper to keep the drive from shifting around.

newegg are worse - i'm expecting a 3d replacement drive to be sent to me on monday (that's already today actually). the first two arrived all scratched and with dents on them, that evidently occurred prior packing.

I hope that Newegg does a better job on shipping the hard drive I just ordered from them Friday than they did for yours.:-/

When I ordered an OEM hard drive from newegg they did pretty much the same thing, except they used packing peanuts.

Too bad TD inflates the MSRP price.. No way its $99. Not a 500 gig drive... Makes it look like a better deal with $60 off! Newegg has it for $55.99, so really is a $16 saving from the egg, which is nice.. Plus free shipping too... This is a good deal... WD sells it for $64.99

Normally it's in an antistatic bag, surrounded by bubble wrap, then peanuts. I've ordered probably 60-80 drives from newegg and they've all been packaged this way, even the open box drives. :-/

Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price probably was $99 when it came out.
Here is a thread that shows that (http://www.techpowerup.com/55601/WD_Launches_the_640GB_Caviar_SE16_3.5-inch_Hard_Drives.html) in the comments below the release of the 640GB drive...from 2008 notice.....
So they didnt inflate anything unles they did it two years ago, the price has just dropped in the 2+ years its been available.

Hence the incorrect MSRP price, which is now $64.99. Still wrong MSRP. Its been two years... No need to keep the OLD MSRP price there. Its tricking you thinking its a better deal than it is...

I thought, and of course could be wrong, MSRP is MSRP. It was $99 at its release so that is its MSRP. I havent seen its MSRP go down.
B/C of time and other technology the price the unit can fetch in the market has dropped signficantly, but the MSRP STILL REMAINS $99 dollars. The MARKET is what dictates the pricing now while the MSRP remains the same price, I would imagine. The MSRP doesnt go down with the market pricing AFAIK.
Again its been over a decade since I was in my Business classes so.....I could be mistaking. I just asked a friend if the MSRP changes (double business major for the record) I will report back. Interwebs wasnt helpful.
EDIT: I think I see what you are saying as far as a 'trick' for better pricing. But what you posted states that its 'new' MSRP is $65.xx, when I dont believe that to be true. MSRP /= market pricing!! MSRP is setup by the MFG to 'suggest' a retail price for the drive. Once thats done, I believe its done and there are no changes or limited changes if any. MSRP (whihc again isnt retail) pricing isnt as fluid as you describe.
EDIT2: Ok, I heard from my buddy...MSRP is not static, but is not as fluid as your statement would allude to. The MSRP may NOW have dropped, but we dont know that for sure unless the MFG website has it on there and it doesnt, its just a price (which is often inflated on mfg sites). But I see your point. :)

That model drive is 2 years old. Keeping the original MSRP of $99, would be ridiculous. Most manufactures that have a commerce site would sell @ MSRP. In this case, its $64.99, which indicated to me that the MSRP has changed.
But you are correct, MSRP is MSRP. Just seemed like TD was using old data to make the deal seem better, which was my point.

I didn't look at the original price. I just saw the 39 bucks which is why i picked it up. It wouldnt have mattered if it was originally $99 or $64, I'd still buy it again for 39 bucks. :D
it should say: "2008 MSRP $99" :D
