NOw and days when i boot up after the computer has been off for a long time I get a low buzzing noise. this noise lasts 2-4 minutes and then goes away. at first i thought it was my hard drive but then i disconnected everything and saw that it was my heatsink

is it making noise because of dust. its odd because it only happens when it rests for an extended period of time. bad motor of something?

If it's the HSF watch out because the fan could be on it's way SOUTH. Might not be a bad idea to replace the fan to prevent a possible meltdown.

I would suggest oiling you're fans Take them out, half peel off the back sticker and place a few drops of bearing or machine oil in the hole. Make sure the oil goes only in the hole and not around where the stickers sticks, so you can replace the sticker. That could possibly help alittle.

The fan on my northbridge makes that noise. It goes away after a while, so I don't worry too much about it. I'll blorb it eventually.

Just a different thought here: You didn't mention that you disconnected any of your CD drives. You might be noticing the CD-ROM/CD-RW drive spinning up on boot. I was beginning to wonder about a buzzing going on in one of my PC's and after I removed a blank CD-ROM from my CD-RW drive it went away. On boot, Windows will check all the drives to see if they are loaded and what is on them. I usually leave a blank CD-ROM in the burner just so I have one ready to go if I need (rather than taking the time to open up the spindle and load a new one). This one was evidently out-of-balance and while speeding up would cause a buzz. It would also occasionally buzz when powering down.

If you are certain that it is your HSF, you might try screwing the fan down a little tighter on the HS. Those screws sometimes get loose and give the fan just enough play to vibrate.

If your fan is going I would just replace it. I oiled a fan once and it didnt help it any. It would probably be a good idea to oil a good fan but one that is going isn't worth it.

My 2 cents.
