Is there any possible way to unlock my PII 300 multiplier?
I am a poor student and my motherboard fsb only goes to 75 MHZ.
for some reason when i set the jumpers for 83 MHZ, WCPUID says its only at 60 MHZ which is less than the lowest jumper configuration. The fastest I can go right now is 338 because the multiplier is locked at 4.5. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Yea, you might be lucky. Try changing your multiplier, if it doesn't switch, it ain't gonna. I don't know of any way to change the multiplier on an Intel.

your pentium2 might not be "hard" locked, but it is soft locked. this means you can change the multiplier, but it can only be lower than the locked multiplier. example: my p2 300(I have one as well in addition to other cpus) at 5x it reverts back to a 2x multiplier. I can set the multiplier anywhere from 2x to 4.5x. the newer pentium2s and celerons all locked, you cant even change the multiplier, so trying to run a 400MHz celeron at 4x100 makes it try to run at 600MHz cause only the fsb is not locked. hope this helps. oh one more thing, klamath pentium2s dont OC much, so dont bother trying 83fsb, mine maxes out at 350. you can try getting a BX board and 366@550 celeron or just get a cheap 400MHz celeron on ebay for $30 and clock it to 450 and youll get about 50% more speed

there isnt a way, the multiplyer is coded into the processor itself, no way to change it.

actually you *can* change it, you can only lower the multi and only for older pentium2 cpus. I can use 100fsb times 3 for my pentium2 300MHz :)

thanks but what you are not understanding is that the fastest my fsb goes it 75 MHZ. My multiplier is locked at 4.5 so the only possible way to squeeze more juice is to unlock it or find out why it only gives me 60 MHZ when i set the jumpers for 83 MHZ fsb speed as i said in the original post.

set the jumpers to 60MHz fsb and see if that will give you 83fsb. I beleive your manual had them switched by mistake
