So right off the bat let's keep this clean in order to make the choice between the two of them I need NON-bias opinions. I need you guys to give me the straight facts on which one of these cards will preform better.
I will be building my new gaming PC in about 3 weeks time I will be placing the order for parts (I'm so excited :D !!). I've been bouncing back and forth between giving the 5770 another try or buying a GTX260 because they are both in the same price range and both can handle some power. Currently I have a 9800GT 512 so both of the cards are obviously better but lately I've heard that the 5770 and 260 preform on par.
Since I'm more on the CPU side I need your guys help to show me which GPU is better and why. It will be paired with AMD x4 965BE, 9-9-9-24 Ripjaw 1600mhz 4gb, and a 750watt psu.
***Last but certainly not least, I am looking to stick with the KISS method (Keep It Simple Stupid :p) and use only 1 card, I know that both GPU's have huge potential in the Crossfire/SLi department and maybe later I will look into that since the board I am getting will support it but for now 1 GPU.
So gents can you shed some light on me? :comp:

Ok well the Card are equal and all but if you get the Sappire HD 5770 Vapor-X then youll be surprised with he temps. The 5xxx series has a bug in some cards where if you overclock you get grey lines and instability. ATI says they will fix this soon with a driver update.
If you are going to go Hackintosh like me its almost impossible to get the 5770 to work on Snow Leopard, But its really easy with the GTS 260
Overall I would go witht he 5770 because its cheaper and more reliable. and cause im a AMD/ATI fanboy lol.

Sorry I should have specified I won't be over clocking the card just the system. I'll be ocing the ram and cpu but the gpu will be stand alone :p Temps wise which way do you mean? Saphire will be low or high, and so what I've heard is true then? The 5570 and the GTX260 are on par eh?

The temps will be very low with ATi 39C idle for me and 45C stable with Vapor-X Technology. Nvidia always overheats for me and the 5770 is DX 11 so there another win

Thank you for the mature insight. If I had the money I would now please... Contribute or don't bother. :p
So does the 260 not support DX11?

Nope the 260 has no DX11 support. Meaning you cant play Dirt 2 at its full Awesomeness

It was mature insight. Ok, will try this. GTX 260 on the egg is $179 and $200. A GTX 460 700 MB version is $200 and 1 gig version is $230. Spend the extra money and get a MUCH better card! Dx 11 card. That mature enough for ya? If you dont believe me go to the GTX review thread and read the 140+ post and review links there. We are talking 20-40 dollars. Not a 100.

+1 to this. I wouldn't consider the GTX 260 anymore since the GTX 460 is out and it is not that much more. I would either get the 5770 if you are on a very tight budget and absolutely canno afford more, and a GTX 460 if you are able to spend a bit more. (preferably $230 for the 1GB version)
Might as well get DX11 if you are getting a new card, not to mention they are more efficient.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the GTX 260 out preform 5770. I know the 5770 is DX11 but any games it would try to run in DX11 would not run really well.

Whoa no way the 470 is only 20 bucks more atm??? I'd be insane to pass that up man. You're right my friend I take back my miss conceptions :D Mature insight it was.
***EDIT: So I just looked through the prices can't believe I almost missed out on that deal. The only 460 1gb in stock right now is one from MSI but it's strange it seems under clocked compared to the other ones.

The link you have there is to a GIGABYTE not MSI. The MSI comes with a really good cooler on it. It's actually the one I am looking at. The MSI version does come overclocked a bit. Some other brands overclock some more but thats not a big deal because you can do that yourself no problem. Never pay extra for factory overclocks. MSI cards actually come with MSI after burner, or the GTX 460 does at least. So you can do that on your own.
The standard clock on GTX 460 is 675. The Gigabyte version is at 715 and the MSI version is 725. So both come overclocked.

Well good sir I think I know what card I'm going to get. Also how much decrease would I see between the 7xx and 1gb version? I assume the difference wouldn't be to much.

Check the nvidia sub-forum and look at the bagillion reviews. The google (http://www.google.com) is also good. I even hyperlinked you. ;)

That that 460 review thread is really good. It's not too much but def spend the extra $25 and get the 1gb version.

yes, it does, but with the GTX 460 so close in price, why get a 260 when you could get way better performance for less than 50 bucks more. And with a 5770 you could add another later and then get good DX11 performance at higher resolutions. But for stuff 16xx X 10xx and less the 5770 offers adequate DX11 performance without having to turn down too many settings.

[S]When I look at comparison pictures it would seem to me that DX10 is smoother than DX11 but of course I havn't looked at comparison pictures for a while so is playing in DX11 really all that important?
To clarify when I say "smoother" I mean everything looks a little more rounded that DX11.[\S]
Never mind I looked at some new comparisons using Unique Haven.... holy crap... huge difference.

You all live in a cheap planet if you can find a GTX460 for 200 $..
I assume you talk about newegg prices, not retailer stores..

GTX 460 over any of those cards...
GTX260 216 - While a good card, does not have DX11.
5770 - While just as fast as GTX 260 216, its DX11 performance in the future will be lacking.
GTX460 - No brainer here folks. If you cant afford it now, then save your quid until you can.

You could probably get the 5770 cheapter than the gtx 260. I have a 5770 and my friend has a gtx 260 and we get similar performance while maxing out any games we play. I will say that ati has a few issues with a few games. Like I couldn't run on some settings on resident evil 5 (I don't even play it anymore). I would go for a dx11 card. P.S. Dirt 2 looks awesome maxed out.

This is just the thread i'm after... I have other concerns about these cards... well mainly ATI in general.
Working in the Engineering industry, using CNC machines, and Surfcam to drive them, ATI isn't supported by ATI, and i've head drivers are a bit iffy on their side... were they just bad stories? are the majority of ATI's actually pretty good?
I am considering a 5770, but am reluctant to buy one because of the stories i've heard.

Both companies have had good drivers and terrible drivers.
Personally i haven't had any issues with drivers from either company.
The current drivers from both companies seem to work just fine.

Well ATI has some driver issues but they usually work out the kinks, like any company the first release of a new driver is the beta used to deduce kinks/glitches. I had a terrible experience with a 5770 but I assure you that the HD5000 series is definitely a good set of cards regardless.

GTX 260
Pros: Performance gains from driver support, PhysX support, partner company warranties
PCIe V: 2.0
DX V: 10
Power: 2x 6-pin PCIe Power Connector
HD 5770
Pros: Shorter card, lower power consumption, 3x monitor support, price
PCIe V: 2.0 or 2.1
DX V: 11
Power: 1x 6-pin PCIe Power Connector
--------------
In raw performance, HD 5770 512MB < GTX 260 C196 < HD 5770 1GB < GTX 260 C216. All of them are relatively comparable to each other.
--------------
Go with the HD5770. The GTX 260 cards used to cost around 140 USD 15 months ago. They're nearing 200 now because of Fermi's flop and dwindling supply as partner companies move on to the GTX 300 and 400 GPUs. Don't be a victim of supply and demand, AMD's evergreen GPUs are more efficient electrically, smaller, newer, versatile, and most importantly cheaper.
