The Intel s-Spec lists the thermal spec for the 1.8A at 67-68 deg. C. The PIV has a thermal protection circuit onboard that is supposed to shut it down if it gets too hot. How hot is too hot?
I don't know, but should hopefully be before it causes permanent damage. If it is a new system almost sounds like a faulty temp monitoring circuit. Hope the driver sets it straight. If not you may have to change your ID to Hotter666.

touch the heatsink. if you cant touch it, then its too hot. same thing when I OC my celeron too high at 2.3v

Shut the CPU immediatly and reinstall the heatsink. Make sure the heatsink isn't blazing hot. Check if the fan is still going.

If your computer isn't crashing or anything, your bios is probably messed. Have you confirmed those temps with mbm?

I am with Yodums on this one. I would imagine that the fan stopped on the heat sink. I had that same problem with my Emachines (Emaheap) comp and it was due to the fact that the fan had siezed and stopped spinning. How old is your comp, as you may have a bunch of dust and crud that have plugged up the fins on the heatsink. With temps like that I would definately be concerned. Do you have frequent lockups when playing games? Or do you get many errors? Those are the true signs of overheating. Hopefully that is just a faulty reading. Either way you would be well off to at least put in a fan at the front of the case at the bottom to suck some fresh cool air into your comp. Most cases have a spot built into them to mount one there. Good luck.
