View Full Version : Cable Splitter for modem?

I've decided to move my modem and router to my bedroom but I already have a TV that uses the cable jack. So I grabbed the cable splitter I found when I moved to this house and tried to set it up. Unfortuanetly only the TV was getting the signal.
Is it possible that I attached the cables wrong? Or am I just foolish to even try it?
So.... is it my splitter or is it just not possible? If you have any questions just ask and any input would be helpful.

Having a cable splitter to split a wall connection between a TV and cable modem is a pretty common setup.
Check your connections and maybe try a new splitter if that doesn't work. Sounds like something might be loose.

Cable modems need splitters that can handle the high frequency that they use. You should be able to stop by your Cable company's office and get one that they approve.
We had that same problem, and just stopped by the Comcast office and got a splitter. Comcast also puts one in the box if you get the kit to set it up yourself. (Like we did)

I know when I moved into my new house I had all kinds of problems getting a reliable signal to the far room where my modem was. It turned out there were too many splitters between the main line and the modem causing a weak signal. First I would try another splitter to check if that's the problem. If that's not the problem try looking at your signal. My cable company comes out for free to check that type of thing so you might give them a call. Plus they will do like stated above and put in an approved splitter as well.

1. you should have a dedicated line from your box to your modem.... IE Line into house > Y splitter that branches to a direct modem line and another line that services the rest.
If 1 isnt possible. then make sure that you are using high freq splitters (up to 2.4ghz+) for every splitter along the way to the modem, and try and keep the number of splitters down to a minimum.

Yea first splitter I used was broken.... but found another broken one and I was able to fix it. (LOL?)
And yeah... same results as when not using the splitter so I'm all good and happy.
