I called them up due to my fried video card. I asked the guy about warenty on it and he told me if I didnt modify it. So I asked him what do you mean by modify (meaning: what kind of mods) and he gave me the rude remark of
"MODIFY, look it up in the dictionary." and on top of that I asked him if I could do the rma request over then phone and he told me no to go on the internet. I replied with "I dont have a video card how can I go on the internet. " He told me to find someone who has it. What a D1(k.

you probably caught a newbie or somthing.
the first time i called them i got some guy that told me to go on the internet and fill out the warranty form, so i did and 4 days later i didnt get an email so i called them back and i got this one chick and she did the rma for me over the phone.
it depends on the mood of the person at the time i guess.

Do they get paid higher than minimum wage? Anyway, they might be ****es because they get calls like "My monitor doesn't work with your card"

they ask "Did you plus your monitor into the card?"

Reply "How do you do that?"

I know I would be a little...agitated!

I worked as a tech support representative for Qwest. It was unbelievably horrible. The kind of people that call is utterly amazing how they can even dial the number for tech support. But about ATI, a good friend of mine bought an ATI Radeon 7500 off their website and decided to return it. He called them avery day asking when his credit was going to appear on his visa. Talked to the supervisor 2 times with the same answer : Im doing it right now just for you, this very moment. 2 days later, no cradit. After 2 weeks he finally got the credit. He bought a Geforce 3 Ti200. Payed off his card and closed the account. Now he gets a letter with the radeon 7500 sayibg that the card was not purchased from them. So he gets a free Radeon card!!!

yes, quite a few actually. Some suprises too for the ones. My one and only call ever to Microsoft was good. The guy couldn't solve the problem(Windows Protection Errors) but he told me where to look and was very courteous and kept the support going even though I was overclocking and he knew it. Gateway was excellent to me especially when my CD-ROM broke. Took only five minutes for them to put the request in for a new one to be shipped, the guy must have recognized that I went through everything to make sure it was bad. I called ATI once, and they weren't much help, though the problem was in the drivers for my diamond card(trying to get TV Tuner to work). Can't say I use tech support that much, just when I really need to talk to the company to get an answer. Most of the people I get are fairly knowledgable and kind, I have gotten the idiots as well, but I don't stay on too long with them, just say its fixed not long after beginning and call back.

The all time best I had was with gateway though. Had some system files and got an expert that got them back for me(didn't know quite as much as I do now, but I don't know if I would have been able to start out either). Gateway does an extremely interesting thing in that they put their smartest people(for the hard and longer to solve stuff) in to a conference center thing with one tech taking up to eight calls(i was with two others) and he rotates around giving a step then letting you do the step. It actually works very well and got my problem solved and the computer running A+ without a format or reinstall.

I use tech support a lot.

90% of the time, if I'm professional I get very good response.

Occassional, I get a newbee which is when I as for an escalation .... but professionally. I never have a problem.

Most Customer service people, get a lot of bad calls .... don't be one of them. But if you do have a bad experience ... exercise your right to speak with a SUP

ATI is very well aware of the OC mods being done to Radeon 8500s. Mostly by inexperienced OC'ers who after trashing the cards, expect ATI to replace them under the 3 eyars warranty.

Ha Ha Ha ... I don't blame them. But smart remarks like the one Eclipse received was probably uncalled for .... I hope.

I recently, did the voltage pencil mod to a 8500 and burnt the card with too much voltage. Luckily I did not do any other mods like cooles, heat sinks, or soldered mods. I simply erased and cleaned the penciling, RMAed the card back to ATI.

I have heard some people sending their card back to ATI, with foreign fans, heat spreaders, and other stuff still on the card back to ATI.

SMC tech support apologized incessantly (don't know what that word means, but it's a positive thing :)) about my router unit going out. They promptly sent my a new unit with overnight shipping.

so far I've had nothing but good experiences with tech support people over the phone, especially with Sony's tech support, they dont get off the phone untill everything is working perfectly.
