In response to rising DDR prices, motherboard makers Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) both launched cheaper SDRAM boards, based on the SiS645 discrete chipset from Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), for the low-price market. Previously, affected by the expensive DDR price, Intel also introduced an SDRAM-based, updated 845S chipset to boost sales.

The SiS645 supports both the DDR and SDRAM platforms, but motherboard companies tended to design their SiS645-based products as DDR boards for a better marketing niche. However, the climbing memory price has hampered the sales of DDR/P4 boards, especially as P4 motherboards are generally more expensive than other products, manufacturers said.

Board makers said that although Intel?s 845S is cheaper than its DDR-based 845B0, the 845S boards are still more expensive than other products such as SiS645 motherboards, and thus less suitable for the cost-sensitive low-price market.

Asustek Computer, which has launched its DDR-based SiS645 motherboards, said that it will not introduce a new SDRAM version, considering the overall product performance. However, it plans to enter the low-price market with products based on SiS?s SiS650 integrated chipset.

Despite the concern that the recent price gap between SDRAM and DDR memories has actually been narrowing, motherboard companies believed that demand for SDRAM boards will still last for some time. Besides being cheaper, the SDRAM boards will also be popular with some distributors that need the products to consume their SDRAM memory inventories.
