View Full Version : A new threat that cannot be stopped

A new threat has emerged. Not to the team as a whole really but more to my own personal production. Unfortunetly this force can not be stopped:( I have known this force for a while but never before has it threatened my folding. This force is my mother ;) Yes it is true. I have been struggling for the past 24 hours with her. She wants to shut down both computers all the time except when i'm on them! The thing is i can't fight with her because she doesn't really have a reason! My dad thinks it's fine because the vent for the heater in this room doesn't blow hardly at all and is always cold so the computers warm it up:) I have no clue how i'm going to get around this but i'll keep trying! Wish me luck:beer:
Try explaining to her that folding may find a cure for diseases such as alzheimer and maybe even cancer. If she has a good sense of humor, tell her that she may appreciate a cure for alzheimers not too long from now :D (jk)
I've been folding 24/7 and haven't really noticed a big difference in our electric bill. Compared to other appliances it doesn't consume that much energy. But it could lead to significant discoveries. In a sense its a worthy charity contribution. Tell her that its the same as sending money to charities, but this way 100% of the contribution goes towards the charity instead of lining some pockets.

I've tried explaining it to her but she won't take it. I'll keep trying though!
man that sucks. the only idea i have is to unplug the leds on the computer and go with a zalman or some type of quite cooler, and some sound insulated foam. make it appear to be off.
Go Dad! Go Dad!
Now you have to convince MOM! lol. That's not as easy. I like Ebola's idea, sneaky as it is. I officially will not recommend such an idea as it may get you into trouble and if your mom finds out that we've been telling you how to be sneaky she'll want to ban you from the forum. ;) So officially try to butter her up somehow, and don't forget to say please. :D

Well i got her to agree to let me keep MY comp on(that's the AMD comp)That i paid for with all of my own money. That wasn't too hard to convince since it is mine. Now the thing is getting the intel one going:) Also my computer gets it's internet access from the intel one so if it's off mine can't be on the internet but i can fix that.

HEHE, I'm happy to hear that u got at least 1 comp to fold as long as u want... (And the faster 1 also :p)
I'm glad I don't have to worry about my parents... they really don't care what I do w/ my comps... even if they burn (nock on wood) they wouldn't care... but I can't stand the noise at night so I turn 'em off... generaly they ran about 17+ hours a day, the Duron is 99% dedicated and the T-Bird, I use it for all the stuff. like surfing and seldom playing...
Try to prove to ur mom that she doesn't have a real good reason to keep the Intel machine off, and try to get ur dad to help u out!
Good Luck
My mum is like that as well. I somtimes leave it on overnight when she is working, but it depends. Where are the PCs? Could you hide them in a cupboard or somthing?

No the comps are in a room without a door. There's no place to hide them really. I could put my comp in my room but there's no cable connection in there for the internet=\ Anyway i think i got her to leave them on but we'll see if she really will.
I wish you luck ]-[itman. Some suggestions:
1)Convince your mom that it is better for the computers to always stay on. The fluctuations in temperature that the CPU undergoes from cold to hot under full-load will shorten the life of the CPU that her hard-earned money paid for.
2)She won't have to wait on the comp to start up if it is already on. She knows she hates waiting on the damn thing to start up finally! Just make sure the monitor gets shut off after about 15 minutes of inactivity and that way she can walk up, move the mouse, and she's ready to go!
3)The computer is using less electricity than a 60 Watt light bulb. (This might be an exaggeration. I am not 100% sure, but she should buy it because they do use about the same amount of power. I know that. Especially intel chips use very little electricity)

Ya the Temperature fluctuations was actually one of my strongest selling points :) Unfortunetly i can't use the boot up thing because she's convinced that when the comp is left on for more than say 30 min the RAM fills up and the computer's performance is greatly lessened. I can't get her to think otherwise on that =\. The electricity thing will help though because i can tell my dad that and he could help me convince her a little more too but for now i think she's gonna keep it on. I'll give you guys an update a little later

ROTFLMAO!!!!!! :D
Tell her the facts: the RAM memory she is so worried about really has no memory at all! That stuff has to be refreshed MANY times every second or it forgets!
I've just come across a very similar situation....except it's my wife...
She just got her hours at work cut from 32 to 18, and might not have a job at all by weeks end. =(
I've got 3 rigs Folding 24/7...she kinda hit the roof 2 months ago when the electric bill came. At that point, I just had Rigs 1 and 3 (see "sig") running. I had some network problems last month, and just #1 was Folding for part of the month...(the bill dropped about $20...I know it's not ALL because of one PC not running....lol) but now I've got three, and I'm sure that the electric bill will be going back up.
She said something last night about maybe shutting them off for 2 or 3 days a week....like, Fold every other day....:( Now that her job is in doubt....damn...I might have to. :( :(
BTW...she still thinks I've only got 2 'puters going...Rig 3 is under the desk, running the quietest fans I had...the P/// runs cool w/ the G "Lite" HSF, and all sound from it is drowned out by the 120mm intake on the full tower (Rig 1) I unplugged the power and HDD LED's to really run "stealth mode"....LOL Last she knew, it was an empty case...hehehehehe I put it under the desk about a month before I got all of the parts together for rig 2, as I knew I'd be running three eventually...
Sly bugger, ain't I?? hehehehehe
Anywho...my production, which had just increased about 40% with the addition of Rig 2 (see "sig"), might take a 40% step back again, if I have to run every other day....
*sigh*

But Mr B, those pcs are helping to keep your heat bill lower in the wintertime;)

Nice thought, but.....the apartment we're in covers heat and hot water...LOL.
Wonder if that means they'd spring for watercooling for the 1.4 T-Bird rig....:p

damn that sucks
am just a few under you and gaining fast !
ewwww sorry ]-[itman ... that is rough.
there is one thing you all could do to lower electric bill. Between 2 am and 4am - put a timer between the refrigerator and your outlet in the wall. set the electric to go off at 2am and back on at 4am or 5am. NO one will know.
plus you will decrease your electric bill ... not sure on this data but at least by 20.00 to 30.00 a month. ( i used to work for the utility company, all the employees did this.)
your avatar is really cool ]-[itman : i'm looking for a scary one. :):)
Good Luck!
