I ahve an IBM Deskstar 60gxp and i ahve noticed that the motor has been getting louder and louder and now is an anoying high pitch noise. However the drive has not caused and system problems but this noise is driving me mad.

Can i rma the drive because of the motor spinning noise?

ALSO FOR YOUR NOWLEDGE THEDRIVE IS OTHERWISE IN GOOD HEALTH WITH NO BAD SECTORS JUST THIS DAMN NOISE.

Start backuping your things. I think its on its way to being dead or something.

Call up IBM and ask them for their word of advice and see if its RMA-able.

Agreed, any time Ive heard a drive start making noise, it has shortly there-after gone out. And no, not once did it pick up bad sectors....

You can also run the disk diagnostic software from ibm. It will tell you what is wrong with the drive and give you a code you can use to RMA the drive.

Back it up first!!!!!!!!!

hmm ok but i think i can return it to the retailer as it is within one year of sale. Also i have known noisy drives to go on for ages before failing.

if i change the orntation of the drive do you think that could solve the noise?

i have done the drive fittness test and the drive passed the test without any problems or errors

Back it up anyways and if it dies you had some insurance and you can either bring it back to the reseller or RMA it back to IBM. But brace yourself for a long ride.

IBM will not rma a drive unless it fails the DFT, trust me, been through it!

That sucks... I'd hate to be sitting on the comp and any moment expect a HDD breaking down!
