Problem: XP-CD doesn't start up after blue screen. I emailade to ASUS support and Kingston. It became so difficiful to communate with them. It is so ****in' support. They said that i have to contact back and back to ASUS and Kingston. :screwy:

Ram is KHX6400D2K2/4G, go to page if You want to read:
http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_ddr2.asp

It says: KHX6400D2K2/4G 4GB kit DDR2 800MHz Non-ECC CL5

Motherboard is M4A78 PRO, manual: ftp://ftp.asus.com.t..._PRO-manual.zip
And go to section: 2.4 there the manual (Ai Tweaker Menu).

I am not good to do so here BIOS setup to do right timing. I need Your help. I am not good to understand computer-language either, so pls to simply explainings, thank you.
I have to do it manual in BIOS.

Boot to a Memtest86+ DVD or thumb drive, and check the RAM for stability at 400MHz.

nisse, take one stick of ram out.

If you look at the qualified vendors list you will note on your motherboard that it only supports a single stick of that memory in single channel mode. They should have caught this when you contacted them.

If you just bought the RAM and it is still under the time you can send it back to newegg and pay a 15% restocking fee then order a dual channel kit that is listed in the QVL that will work in dual mode on that motherboard.

The manual should have the QVL file inside it giving you all the different brands and models of RAM that you can use with that motherboard, also the site may contain a newer list so you may want to check it also, you can get it here but you will have to put in your motherboard model then download the QVL file. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Also if you are just partial to Kingston Hyper X (Good memory I have used it a lot) then this kit only costs $2 more and is shown as dual channel compatible with your motherboard.
Clicky>>>>Newegg Kingston Hyper X KHX6400D2LLK2/4G (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104020)<<<<Clicky this RAM also has better latency 4/4/4/12 over the 5/5/5/15 that your current RAM is. Heck for $2 more its better all around.

I saw and readed manual and links from ASUS 10 times when i got the problems and contacted with supports, too. It seems that it must be singel channel as see the pic u sent with.
A-channel - I will take one of them out, to test.

Yes sure. I would do so. it is free, just to exchange items in Sweden. I am living in Sweden so it is not same rules as your country.
But a problem, is RAM is older then the new motherboard. I bought the moterboard in May. Older motherboard works with but many things they had not hdmi and few ubs-contacts)
The RAM-kits, I bought for more than one year ago.
When i had to buy a new motherboard in computer-shop and the Seller seached and looked for right RAM... So he give me them.
I am not sure if QVL-lists came out after I bought RAMkits for one year ago.

So i can not exchange for free. But i try to get free ;)
I have to buy all new RAMkits.
But if it works not to be working with RAM+motherboard, so I will bring QVL to the computer-shop

If i still have the same problem, then i must to change the RAM to better!
$ 80.99 is so cheaper then in Sweden. here costs around 880 to 1200 Swedish Kronor (= $ 115 to 160).

Yes i did, brun CD and it drives now.
But 400 Mhz? Where Can i see or Must I change in bios? so where?

*****************
I took one of two kits from he motherboard.
It shows:

L1 Cache: 64k 25517 MB/s
L2 Cache: 1024K 5879 MB/s
L3 Cache: None
Memory: 1791M 2013 MB/s
Chipset: ADM K8 IMC (ECC: Disabled)
Setting: RAM: 334 Mhz (DRR668) / CAS: 5-5-5-15 / DDR2 (64 bits)

Does it seem OK?

Have I to use XP CD with 64x?, no 32x?

I am waiting for memtest will be finished. I don't understand their computer-language, so I need your help and explain steg for steg what I will do.
I readed memtest's page where explains how to use. I did, but i understand not real.

nisse, leave in only one piece of ram for now, also you said you change the timing 5/5/5/15 but did you change 2T and voltage to 1.85? this may be why you are showing 334mhz and not 400mhz.

CPU Spread Spectrum .... [Enabled]<----Disable
PCIE Spread Spectrum ... [ENabled]<----Disable
GEForce 8600 GT (off contact, unput)????? not installed? are you using the onboard video card?

Also when checking it with memtest the 400 will show here where mine is showing 800.

I changed to 2T and voltage 1.90. (I wrote 1.85 but it was automatic rolling to 1.90 itself)

Have I to close Memtest now? because it still is driving...

Graphic Card is unput because ASUS support said that all componsents will be unput, also graphic card, webcam, stereo, 2 hdds, etc... and it must be "basic" components leave in the chassi.
But .... Will I put on graphic card?

OK we may have found the problem. Windows xp does not have native drivers for usb so when installing xp it will error. I found this out the hard way. Go into bios and see if USB legacy is enabled.

Its easier if you have a PS2 keyboard to just unplug the system and remove the USB keyboard and then plug in the PS2 load XP then after it is all loaded you can go back to the USB keyboard.

Trying to find the link on Microsofts page that tells about this.

Like I said if you have a PS2 keyboard this is the easiest way to solve the issue. If not I believe the trick was to disable Legacy USB support then install XP and after it is installed to enable the Legacy USB.

When I was loading and found the problem it would blue screen then go black like yours is doing. I just loaded using a PS2 then switched after it was all done and everything worked fine. I know Microsoft has an article about this on their site, I will try to find it.

Also remember that even if this fixes your problem with loading XP, your memory will still be restricted by the motherboard to a single stick of memory giving you only 2 gig of RAM. I would only use the one stick while loading XP in order to keep from getting errors, we found this out in another thread.

Good luck and I hope this solves your problem, if not please post back and we will look for other things as well.

Since RAM is showing good, and if the PS2 keyboard isn't fixing the issue. Have you tested the HD? http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_HUTIL.html

I put in Ubuntu Live CD... It works not, but it came showing lists of installate, test, etc.. it seems ok, but when restart up that it became just black screen.

I understand, bu it is good to ask alot so i want to answar all so i can as possible, fine.

yes, it is too. I tested, too, unput and pick up off graphic card from the chassi and test anything, too.
Also both put and unput didn't works.

I used Kill-CD before all, as formated in may-april, and bought new hhd in Aug, because it was lower GB.. I changed the new motherbroad in June after it burn a bit inside in the chassi, so it was problem after I tried install but it took very power from me. Now, I got back my power to fix the crazy problems. Why i bought a bit after a bit because it is so expensive to buy all in the same time, so I think that it was good to do "a bit after a bit" to buy :)
RAM cards is new too, bought in July.

Motherboard is great for HTPC so it is perfect to use movies, tv, and computer/net overall at home.

The new HDD 1TG, Samsung, I never did formate, but the older hdd was broken after Killer CD-formated. The older HDD was really old, maybe 5-8 years old.
What was it fat, I don't remember, but I did it formate on all and all.

So, I never did setup for Samsung HDD. Only Motherboard's CD-driver.

I know you probably set the AI tweaker to manual to setup your memory timing, but have you tried setting it to auto (this will slow the ram down I know) but set it to auto then try and take a pic of the advanced screen again please. Also disable the USB Legacy Support then try loading the OS again make sure you do a full format and not a quick format on the harddrive during the install.

Also (it may be under the tools tab) you should have a screen that shows the systems current temp and voltages, could you post a pic of that as well.

Once it gets stable and an OS installed then it can be tweaked in the bios.

nisse, can you borrow a cd rom drive from someone you know and try it. You have tested the ram and only have one stick in there so that rules that out, you have tried both video (onboard and card) so that should rule that out and you have disabled USB Legacy so about the only thing I can think of that you have left that could be the problem is the cd rom drive. Maybe you can borrow one out of a friends system long enough to try to install using that to see if that is the problem.

I've a oldest PC, and I picked up the CD-Rom and put in this "problem"-computer. I'd to restart a jump in the motherbroad, because it didn't start after "green screen" of motherbroad. I tried to start with XP-CD in old CD-Rom from the oldest computer.

It still stay white (_) in up-corn of the screen and it is black too, after it loaded up XP-CD. Also blue screen. All stopped there black with white (_).

I test with the oldest harddisk from the oldest computer now.

I tested the oldest HDD from the oldest computer where is installed XP already, and it worked only the oldest computer. It seems OK. But not in the newest computer where I changed HDD to oldest HDD with XP.

It seems the problem RAM itself. I started with the old HDD in the new computer. All start was normal, but when it loads up windows but it came black and white (_) in the corn. The same problem.

So I maybe have to buy a right RAM! (I hope that I can get back money, but it is older then 2 years, maybe I can not get back money).
