View Full Version : Typical times for Astropulse?

Been looking over my time for running Seti, the larger Astro files take quite a bit more time. Does this seem to be about a normal time for them?

After letting the one at the top run until it hit 25% it took 2 hour 20 min so I guess the program is using some sort of averaging to figure the initial time. So its looking like the Astro will take around 9 hours and 20 min to complete a unit in real time.

Astropulse, IIRC, is a video card work unit and I'm glad you posted a screen-shot because the standard work units are there and look quite normal. I'm just guessing, since I only have one GPU and it's a cheap 8400, but those times look about right - uh, the 9.5 hours anyway.
I just got up but I'll look around a little in an hour or so and see if I can't find the thread that talks about this. There's a line on your app_info file where the GFlops are listed and the amount entered there is often incorrect for various reasons - most being that we use optimizers instead of the base SETI app. Kinda' gives you an idea how much quicker the optimizers are! :D
I'll try to get back to you in the next hour or so but, with luck, one of the big GPU guys will see this and give you the details ...

Correction, AP units are CPU only.

Correction, AP units are CPU only. I got it backwards, didn't I? :( I never get any AstroPulse units - I wonder why?
Do you happen to have the latest version of app-info? A couple of weeks ago I updated to BOINC 6.10.58 and things have been a little off ever since. :-/
PS
Nevermind - I decided to update my optimizers (they weren't THAT far behind but what the heck?) and everything looks correct now.
CgS Drone: I've been looking around our past posts and those AstroPulse times look about right. Non-optimized they were running 16-24 hours so your < 10 hour times look good. BOINC should figure out the problem with the estimated time but it'll take a few days. If you're still having those estimate problems in a week let me know and we'll change the app_info file manually. :)
BTW - Are you crunching with your GPU? You can set it to only run when the computer is not in use ... ;)

Yes I am using my gpu it helps a lot.
I thought I read there was a way to not receive the astropulse units, maybe you set it that way  I know just on this machine alone I have 14 of them.
I watched the first astropulse when it made it to the higher 80% area all the sudden it just finished, I thought that was weird so I went and checked and it said completed and did not give an error on it so they are taking me just a bit over 8 hours for one unit and it gave around 1100 points for the unit.

How many units does it typically stack up as completed before it sends them off? I have 12 ready to report but there is no way to manually have it upload them that I can see.

It'll upload based on your network preferences and server availability.

You can manually upload the work by going to the Projects tab, highlighting SETI, then clicking the "Update" button to the left ... :)

Getting there slowly but surely, I picked up 13K this weekend once the pending get validated. Only at 20K once that goes through but I should have a dedicated system in a month or so.

Just an FYI - It'll take about two weeks fill up the validation pipeline. Your RAC will slowly rise over that period then level off ...

RAC jumped pretty good this weekend where I haven't done Seti in a LONG time lol. But back when I originally did it if you could knock out two in a day you where tearing it up. I'm up to 392 RAC right now but that will drop back down since I am going to take the other two off and just let this one hammer on it for a bit, unless I go out of town next week like I plan then I will drop off the charts again until I can make it back.

My Astropulses take around 22 to 28 hours to finish on my Q6600 CPU but my QX9650 finishes them in 16 to 18 hours or so. They won't give you Astropulse work units if you have have a slower CPU but anything Intel Core2 or better runs them fine. When they first started dishing out Astropulses my old Athlon XP 2500+ got some of them and they took over 3 weeks to finish. Yikes! I think you have to be able to finish 50% of the work unit before half of the deadline has expired now which my Core2 CPU's have no problem doing but my old 2500+ got pretty close to the end of the deadline a few times. That CPU is retired from crunching now and I mostly only use my quads now.
Long live the Quad Core CPU!
