I was just given a 40gb ide hard drive from o co-workworker and he told me it should work. I intalled it in my emachines t1842, that already had a 40gb hard drive in it. When i turned the computer on, it worked fine, altough a little slow, but it was very loud. It sounded a little like popcorn poping in my computer, but it was on and off. I am afraid it might be the drive is going out, but it is about the same age as my 40gb hard drive, but my other hard drive is very quiet. Does anyone know how to fix it.
Hey bud :)
If it is indeed your newly installed HD, then there isn't a way to fix it other than replace it with a different drive. Unlike a computer, you don't want to go tinkering about inside of a HD. :o
You might check to see if it's really the HD itself, or maybe it's just rattling something else it the case. Perhaps it's a fan or something. Take out this HD and see if the noise persists after awhile.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out. :)
