I am beginning work on a personal coding project that is fairly large in scope and goals.

While I hate them, I think it would be beneficial to use some sort of flowchart to design a representation of how things will work so I can ensure I have the logic laid out correctly and make coding the pieces faster. Any personal experience or recommendations appreciated.

Looking for the bare minimum so that the end result is simple and easy to follow, yet better and easier to modify than writing it with pen and paper. Suggestions for open source solutions that are straightforward and easy? I only need the very basics, something that can do the sort of things pictured in the attached image but it doesn't even need to be that fancy.

Requirements:

create shapes to represent steps/decisions of process
connect shapes with lines representing workflow paths
easily modifiable

The few number of times I have had to make one I usually use OpenOffice Draw. They have the basic shapes to make pretty good charts, and most of the shapes, arrows, lines snap to each other so it makes it pretty easy to lay everything out neatly.

Last time I did use gliffy.com (http://www.gliffy.com/gliffy/#templateId=blank&signup=1). It requires registration, but all you provide is an email and name, and account is automatically created without having to confirm. You get 30 days free trial, and ability to export diagram directly to jpeg once done. Took me 5 minutes to get the hang of it. There is a small watermark at the bottom of the page, but not in the way of the diagram. Not a big deal if for personal use.

Great, appreciate the tips.

I will checkout draw, though I doubt its flexibility about moving shapes/labels as a single entity, and avoiding getting caught up in graphic editing rather than charting when making adjustments as I better understand the needs.

gliffy.com looks like a highly likely candidate - their premium offering is a 30 day free trial, but then it falls back to a basic offering that is free with some limitations that should work for me.

I'll get back to this thread once I get around to trying things out.
