View Full Version : Really bad "lag"
hey folks,
I've been getting horrible system lag the last week or so, but when I snooze SETI, it's back to normal. I haven't had that before, I could game ( WoW mainly) and everything was ok.
I'm running 50% processors,100% of the time and 100% on the GPU's.
Would it be because of the work cache thats been building up since the servers are down?

I know it's not seti, but my rosetta(still boinc) box picked up a super plus sized WU that used 1.8gb of ram and brought my 920 to it's knees, lag out the wazoo.
You might look for excessively sized cpu WUs.
I forgot to mention one thing, it's common across all my pcs. I don't see any huge WUs, I'm still burning through them nicely.

I've noticed lag for the past two days or so. It usually goes away. I'm using 50% of my physical ram as well.
Im running 3.31 Gb used out of 12Gb( on my main/gaming rig), with 2 games and a few odds and ends running. Even with that load I was fine before when SETi was running. Now I can barely look at a webpage.

I've had some web slow-downs as well. The 30-40 (maybe more) WUs counting down the "project access" clock for uploads is all I can think of that would cause it. At this point I've run out of WU's for all but one rig so I can't check this but you might try setting "confirm before connecting to internet". Maybe once the clocks run down and don't automatically restart it will help. Of course, you'll have to manually allow access that way but at least you can limit it to one rig instead of all of them. :)
BTW - This is off-topic but I'm taking the opportunity, with SETI virtually off-line for me, to switch around some rigs and shut down some of my older ones. Probably half the farm will be off-line at one point or another during the following weeks but some dual-cores will be replaced with (older) quads so, in the end, it should be better than it is now ...
I set the nework acess to manual and it did seem to help . Today after I started uploading ( I guess the servers are back up , I am back to normal.
I went through the logs, I had 2000 tasks waiting to upload right before the servers started accepting them... how many were actually "trying" I'm not sure but I think you solved the problem, it will be great for the future downtimes. Thanks :D
