I will need to set up a network at my parents house for their cable modem. Of course they want the cheapest possible way to share the cable (rr) for two pc's...one with XP & one with 2000 Pro. Granted, the network side of things is a sinch, I'm just curious of any other options I'm not seeing. of course, I could buy a router....hmmm. I remember an old program I used at my old shop....something by Sygate. Let me share a dial-up 768kbps connection on my LAN. Any ideas?

Thanx

the easiest way is to purchase an SMC Router, It will act as the DHCP server, internet gateway, print server, and it has a port for a fallback dial-up connection.

Easy to configure web interface.... yatta yatta yatta....

Allows sharing of a printer conected to the router so that the printer does not have to be connected to a computer... Accessed via the network...

cheapest way would be to use ICS. CM plugged intop a nic in one machine and a second NIC in the same machine connected by cat5 to a NIC in the other machine.

I suggest using your XP machine as the ICS server for the win2000 machine. You can install the ICS software onto your win2000 machine from the Win XP cd.

This way you only have the expense of buying Three(3) NICs.
and a piece of crossover cable to connect the two machines.

Have you ever attempted that? It's not as easy as it sounds. Don't know if I have the IRQ's to spare. Ah well. I ordered a router for $29.99 after rebates....4 port w/ print server....that option seems to be the most intelligent to me. Now if I could just find a cheap cable modem......

You've already found a router- sounds like a good deal too- and that is IMO the best way to go.
The NAT firewall helps, although I don't think its enough, myself; I add ZoneAlarm as a software firewall to all the individual Win(whichever) pcs on my network. I recommend it highly, and its available as freeware.

I have put multiple nics in machines: I used to run my network with NT 40 as the domain controller and DHCP/Proxy server: this was an effective setup, and I think a bit more secure since I could tune both MS Proxy and ZoneAlarm, but the disadvantage was losing the resources required to Proxy and route the Internet traffic. (I ran that setup using both dialup and broadband)

I have also set ICS up: it works, but I don't care for it at all! Very little is configurable, and you are stuck with running your network the way ICS wants you too. No thanks!

Yes. Our server and 3 stations are set up with ICS. We sustituted a router and Cat5 for the crossover cable.
