View Full Version : Idle at 60%

My non-OCed computer is just idling at 60%. I ended all tasks except Explorer and it still continued. Is it Windows? What do I do? I'm on Windows ME with this computer. Suggestions?
You could allways run SETI and bring that to 100% :D
If you are concerned about it, try to do a clean boot of windows. Use msconfig to disable almost everything (remebering of course what was already disabled) and then see if it really is Windows hogging everything. If not, open the programs one by one to try to see what it is.
Completely UN-educated guess: Virus Scanner??

Garfield, know what you mean, I've got a p3, 800 w/ 256ram on ME, and it's constantly idling somewhere between 60 and 80%. even when I ctrl, alt, del. and individually close all running programs exc explorer and systray and that really doesn't help a whole lot. I'm going to try Jigpu's suggestions. BTW, the p3 is still nonoc'd (for the moment!)

What are you going to do (besides what he said)? It bothers me...
It's a BUG. Do your computers have temps reflecting this 60%-80% CPU load? It's a known bug with ACPI functioning.

No, I don't have any temp monitoring on this comp. What do you suggest to do?
You could install Motherboard monitor on it. I suggest to ignore it.

I guess there's nothing else I can do. It's just so irratating when you're doing nothing, and something is accesssing the hard drive...

It's probably someone who put a backdoor into the system so they can monitor what the user is doing:eek: Relax & have a beer if your old enough if not well then a can of whatever;)

Its what the FBI uses to monitor what u download. KaZaa and Morpheus users have the highest risk of getting it because when u download something, it attaches it self and then basically it installs and when u download something, it sends back a message saying what ur downloading. In Hacking terms is basically a "Trojan Horse."

LOL, PPL hacking hackers = dont work!!
spyware WOULD be a major consideration in this case, but it generally doesn't monitor your computer, or put your system under load, until you dial up to the internet. If you have a full-time connection, like cable, then you would see the load at boot-up. Lavasoft makes a proggie called Ad-Aware that will detect spyware on your system, and help you do a COMPLETE un-install of those components...you may want to run it. A friend of mine noticed a slow-down in his system, but couldn't figure out what it was...we ran Ad-Aware, and it reported 134 threads of spyware running at once! You need to scan for this immediately!
I think you guys are just paranoid:p IT'S A BUG & NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!! Even Microsoft acknowledged this. Give it a rest & stop confusing the guy:beer:

System Monitor Displays Incorrect CPU Usage (Q227131)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Windows 98
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
Your System Monitor tool may display incorrect CPU Usage. When this occurs, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
1. CPU usage rises to somewhere between 20-60 percent even though you are not running any programs.
2. CPU usage declines sharply when you move your mouse.
3. CPU usage declines sharply either when you run Windows Media Player or play a .wav file.
4. CPU usage rises when you dial-up to connect.
5. CPU usage does not fall from 100 percent.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, note that you can safely ignore this problem. The value that is displayed on the chart when you move the mouse has no effect on the functionality of Windows 98 Second Edition.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
PS the link seems to be too long to parse as a URL in the forums. Just do a search for it at Microsoft Support.

I used WinMe for over a year, and never had this bug, so since it doesn't affect everyone, it may NOT be his problem...I don't consider that being paranoid...
Garfield, you need to install another system monitor to see whether or not you have this bug. The bug was only with the WinMe system monitor, so it should NOT affect a third party monitor. You may have a trojan or some other type of virii or spyware on your system, and it is much better to be safe than sorry!!!
Sonny, if you are right, then you have indeed helped this member. But to insist that your solution is correct at the expense of calling everyone else here that tried to help "paranoid" is very unprofessional, and down-right rude. There is no way to deduct that your answer was the correct one from where you sit, when it could have been any one of a dozen problems, and we are all just trying to help. Please keep that in mind. Thank you.
Sorry, btw, that was me posting above...I was logged in on my friend's computer...
Oh, and your "bug" was for 98SE...no mention of WinME

Did you see the :p?!?!?! Before you get all worked up why don't you read everything on the thread & notice that I have been fooling around. If your too sensitive well then that's not my problem:beer:
What kernel is ME based on?
WinME is indeed based on the 9X kernel, but it was also a "fix" for 98...MSFT's attempt to make the 9X kernel stable. Alot of the problems that plagued 98 were fixed (some were not, and there were some new ones introduced as well), so to quote a problem and a "fix" (to ignore the problem? you never ignore a computer problem...) that applied to 98 as a solution was probably NOT the best direction to come from...but it may be the case, and it may work for Garfield.
I am not sensitive...and, yes, I missed your smilie. Apparently, I offended you, so I will apologize. I just wanted to present Garfield with as many options as possible to make sure he resolved his problem, as cpu usage that high at idle is certainly not normal. This shouldn't have turned into a shooting match between two members trying to help someone else, and I am sorry it did.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 98
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
When your computer seems to be idle, intense hard disk activity may occur, sometimes for up to a minute or more.
CAUSE
When your computer is idle, Windows performs various housekeeping activities. One such activity is compacting the virtual memory swap file after one minute of inactivity. This is done to conserve disk space.
You can confirm that this is what is happening by running the System Monitor tool and monitoring the Swapfile Size item in the Memory Manager category. When the hard disk activity is finished, you should see the Swapfile Size file decrease.
RESOLUTION
No action is necessary. Windows stops all housecleaning tasks the moment you begin using the computer and resumes them when the computer is not busy.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
Agian with a search to Microsoft's support files for ME:beer:
