View Full Version : EA MMA or UFC 2010?

I normally know exactly what games I will and will not buy, but I'm at a crossroads here. Everywhere I go to read a review on these games, it's filled to the brim with fanboyism.
UFC 2009 was a lot of fun for me. It did have it's problems, but I loved the fighters, the game play, everything. Everything except the career mode and millions menus and crappy ground game.
I've played the demo for 2010. It seems like it retains a lot of the feel of 2009, but the ground game seens even more difficult to get my hands around. 2009 was bad enough.
In comes EA with it's own MMA game. So many mixed reviews on it, I really have no idea what to think of it. So I'd love some personal input from some OCF'ers.

I've played both. And if you've even played UFC 2009 then EA MMA will be a disappointment.
The ground game is easier... but it's so simplistic it's ridiculous. Besides the various postures the ground striking animations and sound effects are HORRIBLE.
Really the best part about EA MMA is the standup game. If you can beat somebody into a TKO then it's very impressive.
Everything else... from the replays to the menus is very underachieving. It truly is a year one sports franchise and it shows. (That said UFC 2009 was better in almost every way.)
UFC 2010 has improved a LOT since the latest patch, but parts of the game are still non-functional (you'll never be able to tap out the CPU on anything but "beginner")
If possible I would say get both because EA MMA has a better single-player mode and everything else about 2010 is better.
But if you can only get one then it (regrettably) has to be 2010.
There's just not enough there to justify EA MMA on its own. The game is filled with B-list fighters and really winds up being a B-list game. If push came to shove... go with the one that's on sale.

Thanks for that. Although usually with a little bit of bias, I hold your reviews a little higher than the random threads I come across on the net.
Well, I can get 2010 for about $25. I might just have to jump on it.
One thing though, try and tell me that it is not a pain in the crapper to posture up when you're mounted on someone and I'll call you a liar. Right to your face!
It is beyond annoying flicking the stick 45 times, just to have your guy rotate in and out of side mount, north south, side mount, back to full mount only to go right back into side mount.
I understand you're supposed to do a normal transition(not a large transition) but it just does NOT work me 9 times out of 10.
Maybe it's something that got fixed in the full game. As I said, I've only played the demo.

I *never* use a minor transition to posture up.
As soon as you gain the "full mount" position your opponent will constantly try to transition out of it. All you have to do is reverse one of those transitions (flick right analog stick to the right) and you'll automatically posture up. You don't even have to bother with trying to do it manually. (I really suck at this game online... but I think I could beat you! :p )

Haha, you probably could. Seeing as I've only played the demo, and only played it for about 3 days with a friend.

I've played the demo for both a bunch on the hardest difficulty and against humans, and I've pretty much decided to get EA Sports MMA over UFC undisputed 2010. seems like ea is a more technical and deep game. I'd have to try the full version of both to be sure, though.

It's not. It's actually the opposite. UFC is the more technical and deep game. EA is a lot more arcadey.
The ground game in EA is just stupid... You can do either a major or minor transition on top... and that's pretty much it. You can counter transitions on the bottom or mostly do minor transitions since it's so easy to reverse major transitions.
But in UFC 2010 you can do (almost) whatever you want. You can (for example) go from half guard to full mount, or half guard to side control, or back to full guard if you want, or posture up in half guard, or you can reverse a transition attempt into full mount postured up... (And there's actually a different command for each of these.)
But in EA MMA you're stuck with either major, minor, or reversal.
As far as I know there's no way to go from half guard back to full guard if you're on top (like... let's say you don't like the submissions the guy is trying to catch you in in half guard.)
Also I don't remember seeing a North/South position in EA MMA. Because once you're in side control the only thing you can really do is go from side to mount. Whereas in UFC you can go from side to north/south, or side to mount, or stand up if you want...
So you're wrong about the gameplay being deeper (although the career mode is deeper.)

I just got 2010 in the mail 2 days ago. Haven't had time to beat on my buddies yet, but the career seems to be the same ol thing with 2009 plus a very few number of additions. This isn't really a bad thing to me, I just wish there was more depth to it.
Edit: Actually, when I think about it, more is different than before. Being able to learn specific moves, and having your guy specialize as a certain type of fighter. You don't just pick Judo, Boxing or BJJ anymore. You can have a fully decked out boxer, and if you want him to be able to do a couple judo throws then teach him. Your choice what kind of fighter he is and what kind of moves he knows.
So how long do you think before we start seeing a female MMA game?

Never. The market isn't even big enough to sustain two MALE mma games let alone a female game.
There are only half a dozen top female fighters in the entire world (and the rest of the females pretending to fight just get their ASSES KICKED by those six.)
So there's no market and if there was a market then there isn't enough talent to fill a whole game. (Unless we're talking about Ultimate Surrender.)

Good idea.... think I'll get started on that right this second. First step, lots of research. LOL.

Alright. I've completely re-evaluated my position on this:
EA MMA *suuuuuuuuuucks*.
It is a cheap, horrible, and PATHETIC game.

Haha. Well, I'm glad I went with UFC. 2010 seems to be an improvement on just about every level, no matter how slight.
