im sure someone here has the answer, google doesnt have the answer im looking for.
my buddy gave me an xbox with a bad power board that i tried to fix. im trying to get music off the hdd. its the WD drive (i believe) that the xbox used.
i thought there was program that could read the hdd on a windows pc, but my desktop is down at the moment. is there such a program for linux.

Unless its a modded xbox where the music is stored as MP3s good luck getting it back. Like, it is possible but its been ripped from the CDs into a retarded format similar to .wav (massive files). You'd be better off re-downloading them.
If it is a modded xbox then he should be checking xbox-scene or something like that? I know it can be done because I saw my mate do it years ago when he was modding his.

i told him it would be a hell of a lot easer to redownload, but he cant seeing as its his own home made music, and he doesnt have the backups anymore. is wife took the computer when she left.

I had a quick search on xboxscene and this (http://www.xboxscene.com/articles/no-modchip-hdd-swap.php) is probably some where along the lines of what you want. Starting off from step 3 it tells you the steps to go through to unlock the xbox HDD and create a backup. I couldn't be bothered reading further into it but have a look at a few other tutorials on the site.
IMO it looks extremely difficult and time consuming. You would probably be better off telling him it can't be done.
EDIT: then again post on their forums asking for help. They know their stuff.

I'm pretty sure xbox encoded everything in WMA format...if he ripped them from CD to get on the xbox they might just be in some obscure file structure..like trying to browse an ipod....but in a pretty standard frormat.
