Lite-On iHAS124-04 Issue

Got the drive back in July free as a combo with a PSU from Newegg. Worked great, reads everything, burned CDs and DVDs without issue. Last week though it won't burn anything. I've tried Imgburn, Windows built in burner, and Infranrecorder. I'm getting I/O errors.

Cannot format medium - incompatible medium

or

logical unit communication time out


No idea why it started doing this. Any suggestions? Old burner was IDE this one is SATA. Haven't changed anything in the BIOS. Should I have?

Tried flashing the firmware, bricked the drive basically. Read it as a CD ROM drive, tray wouldn't open. Shut it down, swapped SATA cables with my HDD, tried to Flash it again, worked, rebooted, drive burning fine now, sees it as a DVD RW again.

So is the cable bad? Gonna swap it out anyway, but would like to know what the problem was. Guess it could be the cable or port on the motherboard, but the HDD seems to be working fine now. I dunno, just glad it works.
