*This thread is primarily for of us who have zero experience with Ubuntu/Linux in general, but have some experience with Windows and computers (such as being able to get into the BIOS).*
How to run Bonic off a Ubuntu Live USB.
I am creating this thread because I had a spare CPU, motherboard and RAM combo, but no hard drive to install Windows on. It also took me about an hour to figure out step 4, so hopefully this will help someone else. :bang head
Things required:
1) Computer to use.
2) Spare USB stick. I used a 2GB one.
3) Ubuntu ISO (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download) appropriate for your computer. (I don't remember if I used 32 bit or 64 bit for my 64 bit machine.)
4) Universal USB Installer (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.2.exe) or your own method of creating a Live USB.
Steps:
1) Create an Ubuntu Live USB. I used the method outlined on the Ubuntu website, step 2 (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download).
2) Boot your machine with the USB stick. Make sure booting from external USB device, or the equivalent, is selected in your BIOS.
3) Once in Ubuntu, go to the boinc download page (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php) and download the .sh file.
4) Right click on the file, select properties, and then the 'Permissions' tab. Select 'allow executing the file as program' box. Close the box and double click on the .sh file as if it were an .exe in Windows.
5) There should now be a folder on the desktop (or somewhere) named "BOINC". Open that folder and find the file called "boincmgr". Double click it.
6) The BOINC manager will open, and will resemble the Window's equivalent.
*Blah blah blah I am not responsible for any problems (such as overheating; I have not figure out how to install/use a temperature monitoring program yet...)
This quick how-to was written on 11/16/10, using Ubuntu 10.10.
