View Full Version : P4 nw question (again).
Anyone know at what cpu temperature the cpu throttling should happen?
According to the white papers I have perused it appears to be approx 50C. The only problem is the thermal diode that controls the throttling is separate from the one that gives you a temp reading for your mobo. Not only is it separate, it's also in a completely different part of the cpu die, which it is said is prone to temperature spikes much more so than where the other thermal diode is. So it's possible that your mobo may tell you your cpu is around 30 something while the other diode is reading high enough to start throttling the cpu.
So I guess this should prove that the motherboard is giving false readings.
Had to cut it so it's not too big.
Well if you take a look at this thread:

You'll see that I'm experiencing some odd temp readings too. The bios seems a little more believable with a water block in place. There are some wild swings between what the hardware monitor section in the bios says and what the asus pc probe reads while in windows with the system idle.

it should be interesting if someone benchmarkes a p4n with various heatsinks, ie various temperatures, in order to know when effectively the cpu runs slower
