I've got an XP1700 on an MSI K7T266 Pro RU2 mobo, run off of an Enermax 550 Watt "whisper" power supply. I can get the proc to go up to 1.61 with just FSB (i refuse to unlock it, too much of a pain in the ass). Anyway, after that the system totally locks up, i get to the boot menu and it just restarts. Now, cooling is not a problem, at 1.6 it runs at about 46 C under full load from U.D., and idles (yeah, like THAT ever happens) at about 40C. Power is not a problem either, 550 watts should be ample power (and its an enermax, not some ****ty PSU that weighs less than a CDR). So, i'm just freaking stuck..heres my hardware..
Full Tower Case
550 Watt Enermax PSU
MSI K7T266 Pro RU2
Athlon XP1700
ATI Radeon 8500 (retail, not OEM)
512 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR
2x40 GB Maxtor ATA 133 HD's
2 Mitsumi Floppies
1 Lite-On 12x10x32 CDRW
1 Toshiba CD-ROM
2 80mm exhaust fans way up top
1 80mm intake fan in front
1 90 mm exhaust (mounted right by socket)
So i'm stuck..is 1.61 a decent overclock or am i just missing something, possibly in the BIOS? Thanks for any input.

first thing i can say is the higher u oc the more voltage on the cpu core you will need. try a bump up to 1.8v. it will bring your cpu temp up a few c also. so keep a eye on that. but i think u will be ok but at load you will be pushing the cpu temp factor of crashing."ie" cpu crashes due to heat.
now i think you are crashing due to lack of voltage on the core. add to it slowly and as small of steps u can. these xp's dont need alot.this should mabey net you 30-50 mhz.then when u find that temps are stopping your oc after this itll be back to drawing board with cooling. its a bad cycle i know.
Like deathstar13 says. Try upping core voltage. I have same cpu/mobo set up and I can get the system up to 1.7GHz just using FSB @ 149. Vcore has to be at 1.85 for this to work.
My problem at this point is heat.
I have the same setup, and I was wondering what you consider a heat problem? Normal I use watercooling, and still sit at about 45 C (no peltier). Right now I am using a Volcano 2, and it sits about the same. But I can only get to 1600 and then I run into problems. I don't know what the problem is though. Could it be heat?
Should I start another thread?

anytime u raise fsb u get more heat. and to raise the vcore u get more heat. both need to be done to get max fsb.so u do both u get alot of heat.
wow 45c sounds mighty high for h20. and about right for a volcano.and i would say your prob is the hs. any bump in voltage or fsb will put u over 50c and thats not a steady temp a xp likes.major crashs.
jester i think in order to get better temps u will need better cpu cooling. with that i think you could mabey gain another 50mhz.
id check into how u are getting those temps tho. the h20 one is the one i see a prob with.most ive seen never goes over 42c with warm ambient air.

um..just a question..you are running same as him?...he's running a xp1700+..the multiplier on that chip is 11....now you said you can hit 1.7Ghz at a FSB of 149??...hmm..149*11=1639Mhz....
I am running a 1700+ as well..(this is why the discrepency caught my eye)..Im running at a 150 fsb and its only 1650Mhz...

46C under load not high? 40C under idle not high???
I have 1650MHz running at 34C load and 33C idle.
Even at 1705MHz the idle is 34C or 35C. not yet 100% stable, gonna up the voltage tonight to 2V or a bit higher.
BTW: I'm now running at ~1.95V using the voltage mod.

Your absolutely right. I was playing with the FSB at the time and had it set at 149 (this level has shown me no stability problems and is usually where the FSB is set at) and mistakenly wrote that number in. I can get up to 154 (11*154=1694), however, with fairly good stability (for some reason always crashes on Max Payne, everything else runs ok). Sorry for the confusion
Good eye Jeniva
