Hi,

My name is Henk and I am living in Spain at the moment.
I came here looking for some answers about CPU failures on which topic I cannot find any useful information by means of general searches and which I suspect some of you may have experience with.

I have a HP nc8430 with an Intel T2400 core duo and only 1 G of memory which I use for interfacing with some data-logging equipment I use for my work already for years, without any issues.

About 2 weeks ago I suddenly noticed a tremendous drop in speed and suspecting I had a virus which had not been killed properly by AVG Free I reinstalled the operating system as I use it, Ubuntu with vbox and Windows XP inside. This setup happened because I had a disk failure a year ago and nobody of my friends or connections was able to re-install XP without missing some crucial drivers, in spite of having almost all drivers on the HP support website. This is just some background info to set the scene and avoid a lot of advices, I can now install XP directly without using Linux so that is not a problem anymore.

Anyway, even after reinstalling Windows XP as only operating system a couple of times on a reformatted disk and when that did not solve my speed problem Linux Ubuntu, also as sole operating system on a re-formatted disk, I could not get normal speed again.

I found a benchmarking program for linux that had some comparison data and running it I saw that all my CPU benchmarks are horrible, even slower than a 280MHZ Power PC.

Now my question is, can this be caused by a partly malfunctioning CPU and is this a common fault?

I cannot offer much in return apart from advice how to tackle EFI problems you may have on your cars when looking for more power, but I hope somebody can scan this info and tell me that my CPU is the cause of the problem or not.

Thanks for your support.

I paste the test results hereunder for reference:

OK Guys,

Problem solved, it wasn´t the processor (bought and tried another one) and it wasn´t the memory either..

Thanks for reading, expected specialists like you to be able to give me some sound instructions..

Welcome to the forums. :welcome:

With that out of the way, the rules state to post in the proper section. You can reference the rules and other useful information for using our website here:
http://www.overclockers.com/forums/announcement.php?f=78&a=65

At the very top of the forum you posted in, there is a public notice which reads as follows:

O/Community This forum is intended for community related topics - welcoming new members, social threads like sharing our pictures, as well as helpful tips and info regarding forum usage. Look at existing thread titles to get an idea of what is appropriate in this section! Hardware and Software related topics should be started in the relevant forums for those topics and will be removed by staff if posted in this O/Community forum.

I'd also suggest you submit your questions in a reasonable format in the future... Your test results make for a lot of scrolling, and most the results you posted are not relevant to the problem. You could have stated relevant system specs in 10 lines or less, then simply included the performance results - all the rest of the pasted content is just junk.
