I have a [ESC] K7S5A with a new xP1800+ my last processor was a T-Bird @1G and this new processor runs about 20 degrees higher then the last ......im not sure if the heatsink is defective ....I know this might be a dumb question, but i dont feel like opening the case right now but is a Cpu fas supposed to blow air on or away from the cpu ? Cause i think they might have put on the fan backwards when they packaged it ?

the fan blows air onto the heatsink.

Did you check to see that the HSF is seated properly. As for the fan being mounted backwards, I think that most HSFs perform better with air blowing onto the HS. Also, what type of thermal grease are you using. If you are using a thermal pad right now, I would suggest getting some Arctic Silver II. Check here for a good deal on some ASII, or you can spend a bit more on some ASIII. http://www.svcompucycle.com/index.html

fans can pull air off or blow on it. id leave it the way it came untill u get the temps down.
first just how high are the temps? u say 20c over so im guessing in the 50c range . thats way to high. my best suggestion is to take the heatsink off and make sure u have thermal compound. and place it back on. it sounds lik its not making good contact on the cpu core. check that.
heatsinks are very easy to install backwards as most manufactuers dont have instructions.

Make sure you don't reuse the old thermal pad though. Make sure you scrape off the rest of the thermal pad with something that won't scratch the bottom of the HS like a credit card, and clean it off with some alcohol or 100% acetone. In the meantime, you may want to use some Radio Shack thermal grease while you are waiting for that thermal grease to get there. If you have a Fry's Electronics near you, you may want to check in with them and see if they have any Arctic Silver II in the store (Be persistent cause the last time I went there looking for it, the idiot salesman didn't know what the heck I was talking about. I should be near the HSF's) Good luck, and keep us posted on how it turns out.;)
