What is the best program for managing and caching SETI over a network? What is the best for windows and/or linux?

Hi there!

I run Setique myself. Setique runs on a Windows machine, but the "client" machines can run Linux or Windows, or probably any OS you can connect to your network using TCP/IP. I haven't had any real problem with it, and I like that it allows all my other machines to simply communicate with my one box running Setique with a 24/7 internet connect with no changes to the client machines other than to add the -proxy option. I only have a small "garden" at the moment, 4 boxes with 5 processors running Seti, but Setique does make it easy to manage them, as it dynamicly manages your que of Work Units, and can be set to upload and download at a convenient time each day.

You can find Setique at http://www.reneris.com/seti/default.asp

A lot of the folks here run SetiDriver, for which you can find instructions at the top of this forum's page in a Sticky thread titled: Sticky: :: Seti Instructions and Files :: New Members Look Here! (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62194). I haven't worked with this program, so I am not able to comment much on it.

I also run Setispy on each machine, just to keep a local eye on how it is doing.

I use both seti driver and seti spy, but using vnc to control all my boxes (12) is harder than I thought and I was looking for a program that can see all the seti prosseses across my network. And magage them through one dial up connection on my main server box. I'll take a look at seti que, thanks

Depends on what are expecting with the network.....some people just configure the internet proxy so each PC can connect automatically to the 'Net to upload/download results.....this can be easily achieved with SETIDriver.....

Other want to have control of when and how do the WU are moved along the network.....here the weapon of choice is SETIQue. A guy at AMDmb.com manages over 200 PC with this little utility.....if you have problems using this program, PM Cy as he seems to use it over a network.

Setique is probably the best cross platform program for caching, particularly if you're using a dial up connection. As far as managing the clients over the network, I really know of no better program than VNC. I use it to manage all of my "remote" clients. Once you have setique setup there's no need to tend to the clients. You just upload and download from your server that has your net connection and the clients run as though you had a live connection.

I run a mixed network of linux and windows machines on my little farm:) and I have used SetiQueue, but I have had a bit of a problem: I lost a few wu when Berkeleys server troubles first got really bad, and still have 18 that it refuses to upload! May try reinstalling now that the problems have improved a bit.

I use Seti Driver for cacheing the Windows rigs, works great.

I use MultiSetiMonitor for monitoring all the Windows clients over the network: view all the running clients and the number of cached wu, as well as any wu not uploaded, all in one window.

And last (but NOT least!) VNC to administer all the computers: cross platform, so I can get into the linux boxes too. VNC is a must have if your pcs are not all in one room!

i didn't know about this program. thank you dru!

i run several w2k machines on a network at work, so I need to be able to run the s@h clc without it being seen. this is easily accomplished by running the seti client as a service or with the task scheduler, but i had not found a good way to run a caching program on each machine in this way.

this takes care of that, like dru said, and doesn't require any client machine changes other than the -proxy parameter. and now i have one machine handling all the seti i/o. very cool.

another neat thing is that setiqueue is designed to run as a service and gives you (nearly) complete control over its settings and stats with an http interface that you can access from any machine on your network. very nice. it has a normal windows interface as well for complete control, but I like running it as a service, since it will be restarted after each boot.

msetimon (i think rogerdugans called it multisetimonitor, please correct me if this is not the same program) is good for mixed os's, since it does not require mounting the client file system to check the status, like setiwatch does. setiwatch works ok in an all windows envirmonment, but it updates very slooowwwly (at least for me). from the looks of it, i think msetimon would also let you monitor machines over the internet, like a home machine when you are work, but i have not tried this. i suppose this would require opening or forwarding some firewall ports as well.

i also recommend vnc, as have several others here, as well an a vnc add-in called vnconnector, which lets you handle multiple vnc clients with ease. for running the clc as a service, firedaemon works the best. for work or school environments where you are only allowed to run the clc when no one is using a particular machine, the windows task scheduler works great. you can set it to start and stop the client automatically during idle machine time.
