this should be in either cooling or cpu, NOT General Discussion.

You will want to try upping the voltage and better cooling will get you more speed

Good luck

HI Grift...welcome to the Forums.

Yeah, this should be elsewhere, but I'm not quite sure where...

A bit more info on your system goes a LONG way towards us being able to help you. While a tip of cranking up the voltage might help, if you're using the OEM heatsink and fan, it might be a bad idea.

If you'd care to reply with a bit more specific info on your rig...what heatsink/fan you're using, what your case fan set up consists of, what you are currently running for cpu core voltage, a brief rundown of expansion cards, etc... we can narrow things down a bit, and get you going.

My math puts you at 1812.5MHz +/- a few points, correct?

That chip defaults at 1662...I'd think there'd be more there to be had, too, but there's always the chance that you've just "hit the ceiling" with that one. My 1800+ will not do anything over 1702, regardless of how high I push the vcore. I've seen many post higher than that. I'm just maxed at 1.7GHz....

A bit more info, please...then at minimum, I can move this to the appropriate topic, where you will certainly get the assistance you're looking for..... (most of the techie's rarely ever venture into General Discussion...)

Cheers! And again, welcome!

athlon xp2000 (still locked)
256meg ocz pc3000 ddr
goliath h/s fan
radeon 8500
2 maxtor 40gb hd's raid 0
sound blaster audigy
4 case fans

im running at like 1.7v-1.8v now (but im using the auto function of the board)

thnks...

p.s. and yes im at 147fsb and 1.84ghz atm

Ok...I'm not familiar w/ that HSF, but I'm sure it's far better than the OEM, given the rest of the list you have there...;) Who makes the "Goliath"?? Copper or aluminum construction (or both, like the Alpha's?)?

Case fans...4 of them...good. Now, where are they, and what direction are they blowing? I'm trying to figure out how the air might be moving thru your box...I'm assuming that the lower front is blowing in, right? Where are the other three?? Any "blowholes" in the side cover?

Um..."like 1.7-1.8v"?? Default is 1.75v. If you're running 1.7v, you're undervolting the CPU. Max is usually 1.85v (available in the BIOS...voltmodding allows more). Have you set this to 1.85v in the BIOS, and tried to run it there??

Ok...one more big question, that I really should have asked first off....what (approxamately) is the ambiant temperature in the room the 'puter is in?? If the air temp in the room is high, you're temps will be high. What are you getting for temps, BTW?? I don't recall you saying in that first post....

This info mentioned above will narrow things down greatly.... ;)

**edit** I just saw your other thread here in GD....is this the same chip we're talking about above, that the HSF failed, and fried the CPU?? Just wondering....

yes its the same fan, cpu, turns out it burned the mobo header up but i was able to plug it into a molex connector and all is well.

talking about lucky :)

as for voltage the highest i can do on my board is 1.85.
cmos says im running at like 105f atm (what temp is getting dangerous?) and im now back to 145fsb, it would hang at 147 when running benches.

2 fans in bottom front blowing in,,,,2 fans in middle back blowing out.
no side blow holes in case.

the room is at like regular house temp that its in.

oh the goliath h/s fan is made by ocz, from all the reviews ive seen its the best one out atm, and its damn loud too hehe. it has a large copper radiator like area for dissipating heat and a 55cfm fan.

105F roughly translates to about 40C...that's a bit warm for an XP under load...are you getting this temp at idle?!?

If that's where you're idle temp is...it's definitely a heat related issue. Likely that the HSF isn't sitting perfectly flush on the cpu die, or there's too much/little thermal compound between the cpu and HSF, or it smeared when you installed the HSF, etc...

So, "room temp" is, oh, say 70F or so? Air flow thru the case doesn't sound like it would be the issue...I really tend to think that this is something to do with the thermal interface, or how the HSF is contacting the cpu (not flush).

I'd try to reseat the HSF....clean off all of the old thermal compound (what are you using for thermal compound, BTW??) from the chip, and HSF, reapply a nice thin even coat, and reinstall the HSF.

I'm gonna move this thread over into the "Cooling" topic at this point, as I really believe this is a heat related problem now.

Sorry it took me so long to relpy this last time...I've been up at the hospital....:( This ( http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=9 ) is why....

Rough day here...:(

Hope I've helped you a little bit w/ your 'puter...Good luck...and again, welcome to our humble abode.
