View Full Version : remote backup to ftp server
i plan to backup our photo and video collection remotely to a ftp server that i setup at work on a pc desktop using serv-u on a dsl connection.
i will be backing up at the moment at least 162gb worth of data from home that is connected to the internet via a cable connection.
i was wondering if this this something worthy of attempting considering:
transfer speeds (limitations as to file size?) hopefully nobody will say itll 50years to do a full backup... lol
anyways, considering the amount of data to initially do a full backup with. (plan to do differential backup afterwards.) i plan to use software that'll allow me to sync if not do differential backups so as not to take bandwidth.
hoping to get some sound inputs as always. thanks guys.

don't even bother trying!!! What I would do is make the first copy from hard drive to hard drive and then keep them sync through FTP.
It would be also clever figure out how many GB of photos you generate every day/week/month.
When these days a external USB HDD costs 50 bucks, I think you are re-inventing the wheel...

It would be easier (and faster) to get an external drive, copy the data to it and then move it to the drive you have at work.
If you were able to upload at 1 MB/sec (which is fairly high upload for a home connection), it would take just over 46 hours to copy the data.

thanks for the input guys. but i did forget to mention that i do plan to use my current external drive where i store my collection and relocate to the office and get a newer external drive and then sync both of them which of course i take it will not take as long..
depending on the month, pictures are around 200-300 RAW files.
also, this is not the only existing backup plan in place that i have. i too have done a backup of my collection to my whs on a different drive, aside from the backup my whs has from my ext. hd where my collection reside. ive also created a sync between my collection to one of my folder shares on my whs.
i cant just fathom what we will do if these photo collection gets lost due to hardware malfunction. just had a recent scare where we lost 5 years worth of photos, and none of this photos existed in any of my backup schemes save for one that i already deleted which i had to RECOVER.

only downside is if you delete one file it deletes others, however, you can make differential backups i think. (aka push files if you delete from other drive its all gravy.)
you wont need to open any ports, or anything its all done via HTTP (or HTTPS i dont remember)
