View Full Version : help me settle a debate.
Ok my computer is a athlonxp 1600 with ak35 and 512 or ddr memory. No i have random reboots and lockups. I have a generic 300 watt ps, with a 5volt line that says lower than 4.81, and the 3.3 stays lower than 3.21. So i told him thats its my psu but he told me know its the ram... i tried explaing that if it was the ram then i hav all kind of errors and what not but he disagrees.... who is right?

I have the same problem (see sig for hardware specs), but I figured it was just win'98!?
its the psu, i think at least 350s are reccomend for the 1.4 gig, but hes dead set thats its the memory....

My vote goes for the PSU. You've got Micron in there and that's definitely good stuff, I wouldn't worry about that. And yes, if the RAM was the stuff acting up, you'd most likely get some errors or BSODs, but random reboots... I'd think it's PSU.

Have you got another stick or RAM to test with? That would be the easy way to figure this out.

I had the same problem -reboots and such-
Mine went away when I dropped 4 fans and 2 IDE devices from my PSU. I like to think that your problem and mine are similar. Therefore, I vote for PSU.
How far are you overclocked w/ the FSB? If its too far, it might be that.

I vote PSU. Had the same problem with my 1.2 athlon w/ a noname 300 watt went away after upgrading to an antec 400 watt.
My pc did exactly the same thing. Dead stick of ram plus it didn't give me errors.

d/l memtest86 and make the bootable floppy. it will do extensive tests on ur ram. thats 1 way of settling it. do a google search 4 it

I had the problem of random lockups and it truned out to be the IDE host on the mobo.

I'm having same problem, more lock-ups,random reboots, then BSOD's.I'm hoping it's ram, cause after reading Paul's(website for my mobo),I've optimized my ram settings in my BIOS,it hasn't been long, 24hrs,but it SEEMs its better. This was my DRAM Timing, plus I'm not running the stock 300w,I got with my case but a 350w enermax psu.
Not sayin its not psu,but hope it was\or is memory.

look in my profile and see my answer!
hehe i had the same prob. even was seeing fluctuations on my vcore going from idle to load. now all my lines stay constant. my 3.3 line is a little low but thats no big deal. gonna paralell that one next as soon as i can get the info.
this is a simple mod guys and rather cheaper than going out buying another 500w psu.
i bought my 400w as my main i had this running everything. but after i saw fluctuations i did this paralell mod and added my old 300w to the mix. 700w available! needless to say i didnt need to spend $150 for a 450-500w psu and now i have 700w instead.
http://www.burningissues.net/how_to/power/psu.htm is the link to the dual psu mod , hey i want a 6 pack for saving u money! hehee
"edit" i went back and did my 12v, and 3.3v lines as my 5v was done as said above. i just connected pin 1 slave to pin 1 master. and also i did pin 10 slave to pin 10 master thats the 12v line.
it seems my 3.3v line isnt much better, mabey im using the wrong pins.stil get 3.25v ive been told this is no big deal tho.
@load i get 12.25v @load and 5.05v@load seems this did my trick. and yeh i do think i needed this. i was curious before anyhow since i was getting voltage fluctuations. it stopped all fluctuations on my cpu vcore. and is even posting in sandra as the correct voltage as set in bios. i was reading 1.8v in bios and 1.86 in mbm. its 1.8 @any load
