View Full Version : Article Stats?
It's me, your resident newbie CE. ;)
Question: Where can I find stats for articles? Say, I'd like to find out what article is getting 'x' number of views?
This will allow me to focus news articles accordingly, based on general interest.
Thanks! :)

Only administrators can see the stats, but if you want to know stats on a particular article, feel free to ask.

You sure about that? I'm not an admin...

Oooo...I stand corrected. Guess IMOG will have to enlighten me. Sorry about that.

It use to be that way, but I could still see it somehow (way back when I started as CE). Then, it randomly just disappeared, and I brought that up at our "Official CE Meeting" last May. Then, it randomly appeared again without anyone changing anything...so I dunno what's up with it

Yup, no way to control access to the stats plugin without modifying code. Not sure what happened when access was working, stopped working, then started working again... But everyone has access to wordpress stats.
Granted, those only display views, and their accuracy isn't spectacular compared to google analytics, however for a general idea of how your articles are doing it does a great quick and dirty job. :)
I don't see that option when logged into WP. Could you update me to a CE and see if that does it? General ballpark will work, just need to get a feel for the audience trends.

Interesting. I will get that access for you. Looks likr i need to test again to see what works and what doesnt. Hmph.
Cool deal -- I'll test it again once updated.

Let me know when you get a chance to check, may be good now?
Are the forum permissions tied to the WP permissions in any way?

Not in any meaningful way. The only way they're tied is via the vbridge plugin that publishes the forum threads when an article is published as well as links the comments to the forum responses.

Am I set up with extra permissions that I'm not aware of?
Hmmm...okie-dokie, not sure what it could be then.

You both have precisely the same settings checked. I have no idea why either of you is different from the other.

The "Dashboard" blue box has a drop down, so try clicking on it. I should have mentioned that, b/c the drop-down arrow isn't shown until you hover over it. So, that could make you think it's not there.
It did have a mouse-over drop before, but it's not there now.

Direct link work?
www.overclockers.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats
With wordpress, sometimes things don't always work the way we'd expect. With plugins for wordpress, often times things don't work the way we'd expect.
Wordpress doesn't ship with the access controls featured in our implementation - those are implemented on our site through a plugin. That allows us to have many people contribute with plenty of access to the backend, while ensuring only editors have the ability to publish to our frontpage. It also often breaks things, and makes things not work in the way one would expect... If I had to pick a scapegoat, the rolescoper plugin would be my pick.
I'll have to play with it and see if I can get it doing what it should. Like hokie said, your basic permissions are identical to mattno5ss. There are some other things I can look at, but shouldn't be related. As with matt's access coming and going in the past, I can't make any promises about being able to fix it.
All good -- I don't want to cause a hassle. I do that enough usually anyway. ;)

You are reporting the hassle. Wordpress plugins are causing it. Unfortunately, wordpress is better than a lot of other free publishing tools. Still, it has its fair share of quirks... Most are due to plugins, which are the result of lack of functionality in the base wordpress package. Wordpress is designed for independent bloggers or small blogging operations, and is less well suited to distributed editorial teams like ours.

The direct link worked for me...
Inconsistency can be very annoying...
Tinkering around and found the profile page (http://www.overclockers.com/wp-admin/profile.php).
The assigned WP role got my attention, shown below.
Could that be doing it, or am I pissing in the wind here?
(Don't answer that last part :p)

Possibly, it looks like our settings aren't exactly the same.
Here's mine for reference:

Not sure how you got that setting, all accounts default to author. I also can't figure out how to set you back to author. Working on it.
Rolescoper was misbehaving. I had to resync it to the default wordpress roles to reset the rights. Now jmtyra's account is back to normal, and maybe the stats work right?
EDIT: Just tested under jmtyra's account and its working alright. Good catch on the weird role group stuff. I've never seen anyone get set to subscriber before... If it was like that last time I checked, I didn't see it.
IT WORKS! YUS! :D :D :D Thank you!!
Now I can do some research, this is epic. ^.^
