i use windows 2000 pro on my dorm's LAN and i need to figure out how to set up folders to share. well, i know HOW to share the folders, but in browsing the network on my room mate's computer, i cannot get into my computer to see the share's that i've set up. he's using ME. i can browse the network just fine, download files to my computer, etc, but when i try to get into my computer on someone else's computer it asks for a password. i type in my password and it doesn't work. i know there has to be someway to get win98/ME/XP/etc computers to see my computer on the network, and its becoming an annoyance, so if anyone can point me in the right direction i'd be much obliged.

win2k is a business oriented OS. it is much more secure than the 9x or me versions.

you will need to go into control panel-> users and passwords-> add.

from there you would need to add users you want by putting in their name and password (or leave blank if they dont use password). finish up the user wizard and then move on to the sharing tab on the folder(s) you wish to share.

in order to let others access a folder on your computer, you need to right click on the said folder-> sharing -> share this folder -> permissions.

from permissions you can give users, groups, and/or everyone permission to read, write, or both into that folder.

the people wanting to get into your computer will need to actully LOG ON to their computer with that particular username. they cannot escape out of their logon screen, they must log in.

this is a secure way to allow certain people access. it's not like winME or 9x where basically anyone can get into any shared folder (yes, it has limited security, but it's not very good).

i hope this made sense, post back if you need further help! and good luck!

also to note:

this is probably another step you will need to take before they can log onto your computer via network.

control panel-> administrative tools-> computer management-> local users and groups. (note, this can replace the step i put in about adding users. you can right click in a blank spot on the right and add users here, also)

in the users and groups, add the new user (or if they were already made by the first way i showed you how to, skip that step). once finished, right click on the user and go to properties.

make sure to uncheck "user must change password at next logon", also check "password never expires" and "user cannot change password".

unfortunately, there is no way (that i know of) to have a user change their password on win9x or winME that will be accepted by the win2k OS. in order for them to change passwords, you will need to change it both in the host machine (remote) and you will need to change it in the win2k computer.

once again... good luck!

spike,

yeah, it can be a pain. but once you set up users, each folder you want to share only takes a minute to setup. and the users dont take too long...

it seems (and sorta is) complicated, but after doing it, it gets less intimidating.

well, the way our network is set up, you just open up the network places and go and browse the network, looking for mp3s, pictures, etc...people from all over my dorm can look at everyone else's computers. there is no way for me to make it so they know what user name and password to enter...and i hardly know most of them so its not like i can just tell them..its kind of like browsing the network is just an anonomous thing, you never know when someone is doing it. so it really isn't practical. i guess i'll just have to download their stuff and not share anything :)

i hear ya. win2k isn't too friendly in that case... it's great for security for business, but for your application it seems like a huge pain.

maybe you all should build one fileserver for the whole dorm. and have everyone upload everything there, so everyone can use it. other than that, it's lookin like you get all the goodies without haveing to give any out :D

When you try to log into your computer from ME, does it ask for a logon and password?

Use your admin login and password from your windows 2000 machine. This should give you access to your shared folders on the windows 2000 professional machine.

Good luck.
