my guess is you are using a copy and not an orig XP CD?
either way i think you must reinstall because u have a botched setup/partial install because all the setup files were not copied to the HD setup folder from the CD during the initial install and during reboot it seeks them and again cannot copy. If it is not a bad copy then i would think that it is a bad CD.

not sure but this is my guess

You can always boot to the XP CD and have it reformat the hard drive before installing, that should solve the problem. If you need to backup anything on that drive first just get a boot disk. You could also try booting to the CD that your demo version came on and see if it gives you the option of doing a repair, that might let you back into the demo version to do any backup that you need to do.

In the long run you will be much better off if you reformat and do a clean install of XP rather than trying to upgrade or reinstall over any existing OS.

well I i would also guess that the problem is with the attempt to update the demo version
your best bet would be to do a format, anyways updates are usually poor installs at best
if you have an update version, i would bet that it is to update win9x, nt- but not xp demo
