View Full Version : SETI Offline again

From the advanced view, transfers tab, select a work unit, retry now.
That should restart the attempt to download work. My two strongest SETI Machines have completed all of their pending downloads.
Now I wait for uploads to be re-enabled.
EDIT: Project is offline again :(

I (automatically) managed to get three of the four units BOINC has been trying to d/l for days. :)
On the other hand, I just did a Retry on the fourth WU and it reset for 2.5 hours. :-/

The bandwidth to SETI is currently maxed, and with sooo many people with stuff to ul/dl, it will be very spotty connection for all of us for a few days I would think.
I got one work yesterday unit that's been running for 14 hours and is almost half completed. That's a little surprising since Rosetta work units typically complete in about 3 hours. Do the SETI work units typically take that much longer to process?

Is it an Astropulse? There's the question! :)
Check the work unit name in BOINC, it'll say if it's AstroPulse.
AstroPulse (AP) units take quite a few hours for newer processors - even more for older ones. I think my Opty 165 will do about one AP a day. :-/
MultiBeam units go pretty fast. Same processor will do an MB in less than two hours. Your Phenom II should churn out an MB in ~1.5 hours.
Is it an Astropulse?
Yes. Looks like it is going to take about 30 hours. I guess if I'm only going to get one WU from SETI, it might as well be something big!

It'll finish quicker than that. BOINC takes awhile to get close to your actual WU times. You've got (at least I hope you've got!) optimizers running, which BOINC isn't accounting for as yet. I bet if you watch the "To Completion" time it'll skip a second every once in a while. ;)

I'm estimating by present time (15:40) and % complete (51%.)
Optimizers? Are they available for Linux?

On the main rig just under 300, which will get me to tomorrow morning. My other rig has tons. Wish there was a good way to move those WUs around from machine to machine.

Shouldn't be as simple as going into the Boinc Files and putting some WU on a flash drive and then dumping them into the right folder. Are am I missing something?

Shouldn't be as simple as going into the Boinc Files and putting some WU on a flash drive and then dumping them into the right folder. Are am I missing something? Not that easy, though I often wish it were! LOL! The Project keeps tabs on what machine has which WU and I think the machines themselves keep track, too. If you move a data file from one machine to another the second machine wouldn't know the file was there because it didn't download it from SETI, so it would have no record of it in it's db. And even if you could "convince" a machine to run a WU like that, SETI would probably error it out when it got the WU back because the wrong machine would have processed it. SETI is an on-going science project - everything gets documented. ;)

Back in the original S@H days ("S@H Classic"), there was no caching system per se. Everytime a pc wanted to crunch a WU, it had to connect to the Berkeley servers and download work one WU at a time. SETIQueue was a program which essentially does what BOINC does now, but with a few extra nifty features - such as the ability for other rigs on the network to grab WU from a "pool" type cache, and send them back as required.
Not sure why Berkeley decided to drop support for this addon, but I vaguely recall seeing a post on the forums years back as to why it's no longer 'allowed'
Ahhh, I -almost- miss the classic days lol. As much as BOINC is a great idea for cross-project work delivery, there was just something about classic that I really enjoyed.. Ah well :)

Do I just set Rosetta to a really low % resource share (ie 1%) and SETI to a really high %?
::Nope that didnt work. Rosetta started runnin in high priority mode and paused my SETI WUs. Hmmm

The multi-project settings I've not taken the time to figure out, but it will definitely turn SETI off if you got another project's WU that is a shorter deadline. Then there's this concept of long-term-debt and short-term-debt that also kicks in. I think if you just let it go, it will work out. But it may not do things in the way that you perceive to be 'logical', but it makes sense from an overall BOINC perspective. Well, I have to assume it does anyway.

I wasn't able to Get any more GPU units But I did get enough for my CPU for at least a 1 more day. I still have a couple of GPU WU left but they Won't last Long.
Anyone want to take bets on a server crashing because of the influx of new data and/or a different array going down because of everyone needing more WU.

Hey there, my fellow DC folks. Sorry to hear about the SETI issues again, that's very frustrating. (Like, bang-head-on-desk ARG!)

Every Tuesday morning (Pacific time) we begin a 3 day data distribution outage to focus on science processing and development plus any needed systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. The web site (including the forums) will only be offline during the database maintenance and backup portion of the outage. On Friday, you may experience connectivity issues as the servers catch up with demand.
So looks like Friday is when we can start to get more work.. crud >_<

Since I signed up again for SETI over a week ago, I've only gotten one WU - an astropulse. (Sounds cool! ) It took over 30 hours to process and it's now siting at the top of the list of jobs, still waiting to return to the SETI server. <sigh> I hope they get things sorted before March 5 when it becomes overdue.
In the mean time, near constant operation of Rosetta on my laptop and desktop has brought me into the top 20 of the Overclockers team for Rosetta. :D

Yea I have mini Collatz running on My Pc's. When i first joined it went down for like 3 days.
I found my completed astropulse uploaded.
And a new astropulse started :attn:
So I decided to try to install the optimized applications from Lunatics.
And trashed the only WU that I had. :bang head It shows Is there any way to restart the processing for that WU?
Question: For a Phenom II should I be using the SSE3 version? Checking /proc/cpuinfo (I'm running Linux) It lists sse, sse2 and sse4a. Other web research indicated that the Phenom's do support SSE3.
thanks,

Unfortunately, no :( The optimized files may have trouble processing an existing WU and spit it out with error.

Modern AMD can go up to SSE3 while Intel is SSE4 (also known as SSSE3, notice extra 's') so it does get confusing. I stick with 3's for AMD and 4's for Intel for now.

AFAIK the double banner has to be set up for each user by a moderator. I thought about asking Rufus for one, but I don't actually do enough Rosetta to waste his time on it.

Double banners are available for different teams. For DC teams, it's Rosetta, SETI or F@H. Then it's benching yes/no, and lastly the news team. You can't represent multiple DC teams, unless (as you indicated) someone (or someone) did some magic, but you could be a benching team member + DC team member + news team member.
When participating during the Rosetta Rosy Harvest contest, I attempted to have a Rosetta + F@H banner, but it was one or the other. :(

Edit: I'd like to have the Rosetta banner, too, as I've donated quite a bit of computing time during the contest, but /sigh no such luck.
