Just got my new machine running a few days ago ( ill put specs at the end). Everything is perfect! I leave my computer for about one hour, and come back to it noticing that the hard drive light is stuck ON. It was still working perfect tho, so I restart.
When I restarted, NONE of my IDE devices were detected. I go into BIOS, and try to auto detect, but it finds nothing. So I power everything off, and try different molex connectors and make sure everything is plugged in right. I try to boot up and still nothing! So one again I fiddled with the connectors, and after a few more times of trying, it detects the hard drive, but now it doesnt detect my DVD and CDRW!!!. Boots into windows and still doesnt see them.
I try to restart and cold boot, still nothing, so I said screw it and I go to class and return 4 hours later......... Came in here, turned the power on, and EVERYTHING is detected and seems perfect again! This is confusing even for me because its working perfect one moment, then dead the next, the perfect again, WTF!
I ran disk checking, error checking and defrag, nothing! If anyone has any clue please help, I need a stable system! Here are my specs

Win 2000
AMD 1800XP with Volcano 7 (not overclocked)
Abit KR7A

That's exactly like my laptop. It stopped working, well the sound didn't HD had bad sectors, constant crashes, and it kept whining at me. Then left it alone a couple of days and it runs like I just got it.

omfg what is that car in your avatar doing!?!?

Heron: Power supply is a good start, 300W probably won't cut it for all those things you're running off it(the CPU, drives, and RAM will suck a lot of juice, drives especially, on startup). I would suggest getting something like the Enermax 431W PSU, or at least a decent 400W (like Sparkle).
