I'm looking to pre-order Rift this weekend, and Direct 2 Drive's 20% off all games promotion is pretty tempting. Do they just give you a serial and a link to download your game? I assume not, but if they give you a serial, can you just activate it on Steam? Is there a Steam-esque client that controls the game once you download it, or is it just something like the EA Download Manager, where you use their program to download the game, and that's it? And, is there a timeframe on how long you can get your game from them. Like, with EA, you can only download you're game for 1 year after purchase, after that you need your own backup, unlike Steam, which is as long as the companies still around. Thanks, never purchased a game from D2D, and just wondering if it's worth paying the extra 20% to go through Steam :)

I don't believe there is a key, but instead a program that runs to activate/register the game on their server. I'm not sure if they have a limited number of registrations, though.

I had an issue with another company (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=512978&highlight=test+drive) with the same product model, though. It is honestly a headache and I wouldn't buy anything online, except from steam and ones that give you the game straight up.

Yeah, I like Steam more so just because I like having everything in one centralized place. I bought BFBC2 for $20 on that first major sale right after it came out from the EA Store, and hated that it wasn't through Steam.

Thanks for the heads up Thid, I'll just pay the extra $10 and get it through Steam, no big deal :)

There's Steam and Impulse, those 2 platforms are similar. And then there's D2D, Xfire also sells games, and keep them updated for you.

I used direc2drive to buy black ops when they had a 25% off sale. It was just the key and the download link, which I used as a preload for steam.

Fun fact!

A few of the games I have bought from D2D are installed/activated and managed through steam. MW1, MW2 and expansions were all bought on D2D, but their installation was through steam, which was cool.
