View Full Version : Trouble getting work units
Hey,
I have no issue getting units on one SLOW computer but can't get any on my laptop which is really what I would like to be crunching with. Anyone else having issues getting units?

Hey mate :)
If we look at the Cricket graphs (http://fragment1.berkeley.edu/newcricket/grapher.cgi?target=%2Frouter-interfaces%2Finr-250%2Fgigabitethernet2_3;view=Octets;ranges=d) we can see that the line at Berkeley has been maxed out for some time now, with only a little dip in the numbers a few hours ago, which was pretty much the only time I've not had problems with getting WU.. So you're not alone! Keep trying (clicking retry every now and then, and if you notice the WU timing out, you could try suspending/allowing network traffic which will just resend the request), but note that this puts extra load on the scheduling server; but if you're desperate.. Hey, why not? :)
Hope this helps!

Yeah I haven't been able to get more than 1 or 2 WUs at a time for my hexcore + hd5870 for almost 2 weeks now.

Hmm. Given what the server status (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html) page looks like, it looks like we're about to run out of work soon. There's 11 chanels in progress, and only 9 channels left to split. So, 20 channels in total. 14 channels represents 50.20GB of data, which gets split into (roughly) 370kb WU. Each WU is split into a minimum of 2 results (the minimum quorum), thus giving us
((50.20*(20/14)*1024*1024)/370)*2=406,475 end-user WU left to crunch. Might sound like a lot, but across X million CPUs/GPUs.. it's really not :( In reality though, this number is somewhat of an underestimate; the size of the WU is overestimated slightly, and a lot of WU get split into more than 2 end-user WU due to various reasons (user aborted WU, errors, client detachments, invalid results etc.)
Not sure when the next set of tapes will arrive at the lab to be split (for some reason I can't access the SETI forums).. so all I can say is good luck to all! Hope you get at least some work to tide you over :)

Once I filled up with WU I haven't gotten anymore. :(
So I hope that it doesn't go down again as I don't have full cache.

Head for Rosetta and help them out.

All of the tasks in BOINC manager show as 'Downloading' but aren't listed under Transfers. Anyone else see(ing) this?

That's a weird one. I'm not getting any new work, but it's working on the old stuff just fine. All of my uploads and server requests are going through fine as well.

I did a while ago!!:santa:
I have to say, this is super frustrating not being able to get units. At least my power bill has dropped:rock:

Thanks for the link! Problem is when I see a drop I have tried to get units but with no luck. Super frustrating. My slow computer have little issues getting units while my beast (for me ;)) can't get squat.

Have you tried to detach/reattach to the project? Not sure if that is a viable solution anymore, but it had proved useful in the past.

That might be your only option at this stage, sadly. :( While it does mean that all your current WU which are set to 'downloading' will simply error out with the code "client detached", when you reattach it should just download a new set of WU.

Do this. It should solve the problem.
