View Full Version : Windows Backup
I'm backing up a 20GB drive for a friend. I'm running windows XP and he's upgrading to a new Dell, anyways. I haven't had alot of luck using Xps built in Backup software, it seems to have problems with my CD burner. Any suggestions for a 3rd party software or should I just copy the files to a couple of CDs and let him copy them to his new hard drive like that?
Norton Ghost. I think its about the best around.
Cool, thanks
That looks like it'll do the trick, I'm at work right now, do you know if ghost will write to a CD? or CDs?

You can also use Disk Copy by Powerquest (the same people who make partitionmagic). Its also very good, but a little pricey. I used it to copy a 13 gig hard drive (2 NTFS partitions) to a 40 gig hard drive and it worked perfectly. Copies the drive bit for bit, so you have exact same OS but only on a bigger drive. It automatically resizes the partitions, if you have multiple partitions, to the same ratio as you had it before. i.e. if you have a 10 gig hard drive w/ a 2 gig and 8 gig partition and were upgrading to a 40 gig hard drive, disk copy would make an 8 gig partition and a 32 gig. It's realatively easy to use...the instructions are pretty good. Good luck with it
EDIT: plus with this, you don't need to use CD's. Both drives are hooked up to the computer and it copies from one to the other. I just checked on their website (http://www.powerquest.com) and it is 49.99.

only problem with that is I don't have his new computer. He lives about an hour from my house (we know each other from work). I'm doing this over the weekend for him. Giving him his old drive and the CDs on Monday.
