View Full Version : Dual CPU cooling is LOUD!!!! help plz!!!!

I recently build a dual CPU computer and I thought cooling was going to be an issue so I put two Dragon Orb 3s on the processors. Well they are 7200 rpm and really loud because they are creating some sort of harmonic effect. It's like how an airplane with 2 jets makes a high-pitched humming sound. This is getting really annoying. Should I put one quiet fan on one cpu and leave the other with the dragon orb or replace both with quiet fans? Would the quiter fans create the same harmonic effect? Or would the heat difference from the 2 different coolers screw with my mobo?
I know I need to replace at least one, so what is the quietest fan i can get that will properly cool an AMD T-bird 1.4ghz?
btw, I also have 4 antec case fans, but that isn't an issue because you can't hear them over the high pitched humming sound!
I would appreciate it if someone could help me, thanx.
The Thermaltake 6cu with the 32cfm fans would make your system much more tolerable. Newegg has the 6cu for $11 so you cant go wrong with that. If you want to spend a bit more you can get better cooling with SVC Golden gates (http://www.svcompucycle.com) for about $25 each.

Thanx, I found the Golden Gate Heatsink...$20. What fan should I put on this? Also, will these fans cuase the same harmonic effect?
If you get the 32cfm fan you should have no problem with extreme noise like your dragon orbs.

Is this the quietest i can get? I'm willing to spend a little cash, I'll just have to babysit a little more :eh?: I would really just like enough to keep my system cool enough with as little noise as possible.

Ok, I just noticed something. The stats say that the dragon orb runs a 38 dba, the volcano 6cu runs at 32dba, and that the generic 32cfm fan runs at 40dba. How is this going to make my system quieter?
The actual DB rating for the dragon orb 7k fan is about 47 decibles not 37 like they advertise. You might look into a thermaltake SK-6 but it will really cost you for 2. I believe it was newegg.com that had them for $25 with no fan.
im using 2 sk6 heatsinks with sunon 23cfm fans. very quiet and effective.
Your dualie board doesn't have 4 holes around each socket does it? I don't think they do but I'm not shure. If you do have the holes you could get an Alpha 8045 with slower moving 80mm fans. This would be silent and deadly.

well I think I'll go with the SK-6. Mekboy, you are running almost exactally what I have, so it should work for me. How loud is it compared to a Dell or Compaq retail computer? Will 23 cfm really cut it?

ANOTHER IDEA JUST HIT ME! Could i slow down my current fans! I don't have any idea how to do this, or monitor the temp, but I guess it could work

Having two high performance fans running at the same speed can cause annoying beat frequencies ... this is one reason to avoid stacking two same fans in series. It gets even more annoying as they go in an out of "sync" as their speeds vary slightly around the nominal. If you must have such a set-up, you should try one of two things; physically isolate them, either by distance or some sort of sound shield, or put a small resister in line with one fan to slow if 2 to 5% or so ... it should not take much, just enough to drop voltage 0.5V or so ... a good wire wound resister, maybe 1 to 5 ohms, depending on the current draw of your fan. Good luck.

My last question, Would the volcano 6cu work nearly as good as the sk-6 and goldengates with a sunon 23 cfm fan? that 23 cpf kinda worries me, but if it worked for mekboy, it should work for me.
Hmmmmmmmmm..........
The copper blocks are very demanding, they need at least a Delta 38, or something farmiliar with the Delta 38 to keep up with them.
If you plan to run the Thunderbird at stock speeds, then yes the Volcano 6cu would be at least not make you deaf  You could also try lapping it, and using AS3 in the process to get your temperatures down a little.
Other than that, dragging lots of copper on the CPU, requires a bigass fan!

So, should I go with the ThermalRight SK-6? I just want to do this right. I don't mind the price, but what fan should i use, and how would this compare with the 6cu as far as noise and cooling. Thanks for all of your help guys
Even a pair of quiet Glaciators become somewhat anoying in a dually. The harmonics build on each other, YECCH! The real quiet solution is water cooling.

AGHHHHH! WHAT DO I DO?
ok ok here is what you guys have told me i could do...
1. slow down one of my existing dragon orbs with a resistor
2. get 2 thermalright sk-6s with sunon 23 cfm fans
3. get 2 goldengates w/ 32 cfm fans
4. I guess i could do #2 and slow down one fan by 5%
5. no way i'm doing water cooling
What is going to be the quietest without my computer crashing?
You guys are helpful, but this is bringing up a lot of new questions.
Like i said i went through the same debates as you. The alphas will not fit your motherboard. I was using 2 sk6's with 50cfm delta's and man did that suck. I was thinking water cooling but it would require to much work to keep things quiet and stable. I put to 23cfm sunons which are some of the quietest fans you can get. Even when paired there are no vibrations and noise levels are pleasant. temp are 37c on idle and 43c on load. Very respectable. Btw..regarding the statement made from yodums about copper heatsinks demanding delta's...i find that to not be the case with sk6's. The differene between the 50 cfm deltas and these low speed sunons were so small that i see no reason to even consider the delta's. I had about a 2c difference.

Thanx a lot mekboy! Ok, i'm getting the sk6's with sunrons. Thanks for your help everyone. I might also try the resistor to make things quieter if needed.
Heres where i got the fans:
Sunons (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/sunon60mm.html)
I can remember where i got the SK6's but im sure you can find them. Make sure to use some artic silver 3 ( 2 if you already have some) instead of the supplied thermal pad that comes with the heatsinks. I also recomend a case with some good airflow. The cheiftec 1040 case works well for duals... thats what im sportin.
i really dont think u have them but if u have the 4 holes around ur cpus u could put a pair of pal8045 in there 30 bucks for the heatsinks then u can get a low sound 80 mm fan.. sence pal8045 are so huge and you need a 80mm fan not a 60 mm fan u can get more air in with much less noise..

thanx guys, i just bought 2 sk6's, 2 sunon 23 cfm fans, and 2 rounded cables for $95! That just about cleans me out. Oh well, at least now my hearing will improve :D

The only dual amd board that has the 4 holes on them are the Tyan thunder. Even then the alpha would never fit. There are to many capacitors in the no component zone.
well that blows.. hmm u thinking water cooling would be to hard? or cost to much.. i think it might

I was a fool who didn't realized the results of a watercooling setup before.....
and it is much more fun to assemble all the parts, testing, designing...
Watercooling is safe, very quiet and extreme oc'ing friendly...
Its not so hard and expensive that my wife didn't understand and allowed me to do it ! :)))

go with 2 Millenium Glaciator 2's
the OCers.com reviews are good and you cant beat the price
with a stick.
Millenium Glaciator 2 seems like a safe bet if u dont move ur pc around a lot..

These will cool very well Proided you have really good case cooling.I suggest at least 2 80mm intake down low and 2 80mm exhaust up high.
I made direct PVC ducts on my dual box,With 30cfm on the SK6 at 32dba and MAX LOAD IS 41c.
